The Associate Director of Education facilitates the design, development, delivery, and evaluation of learning programs for Burning Man staff, network, and the public. Develops strategic goals, plans, budgets, and curricula for educational programs. Drives iterative development of Burning Man core curricula in culture, leadership and management skills. Oversees instructional design and content creation activities; develops and manages processes to support them. Supports both in-person and online educational engagements through learning experience design, content development, and facilitation. Supports and mentors instructional designers, facilitators, and content developers. Supervises Burning Man online learning programs and systems.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Supervises Education team; coordinates team activities, priorities and schedules across projects.
Mentors team members in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in their careers and further Burning Man’s mission.
Manages vendor relationships with independent consultants including instructional designers, graphic designers, and audiovisual specialists.
Manages volunteer and affiliate relationships related to teaching and learning.
Curriculum & Content Development
Drives the iterative development of Burning Man core curricula (i.e., culture, philosophy, leadership/management) for distribution through multiple channels and learning environments.
Owns the product roadmap for core curricula course portfolio, collaborating with learning community managers across the organization to develop learning and teaching strategy.
Analyzes audience needs and customizes course materials for delivery to internal and external learner groups; drives development of “export” offerings based on Burning Man core curricula.
Consults with subject matter experts throughout the organization and larger community to identify learning objectives and strategic goals for staff and community education.
Drives process of learning from student feedback, peer dialog, and educational best practices to make Burning Man education programs more effective and impactful.
Produces course materials including texts, videos, learner exercises, evaluations, and surveys.
Develops communication resources for educational offerings including course descriptions, learning objectives, syllabi, enrollment materials and completion/certification materials.
Develops presentation outlines, facilitation guides, and other instructor support materials.
Actively studies trends and developments in adult education and online learning to keep Burning Man education programs relevant and effective.
Leads cross-functional team of writers, designers, audiovisual specialists and course administrators to deliver outstanding digital learning experiences.
Supervises quality assurance testing and student feedback processes. Uses learner feedback and analysis to define and drive new course requirements.
Develops communication plans and materials to support course enrollments, completions, and ongoing operations.Serves as an instructor, facilitator, and student advisor for cohort-based online classes.
Works with Education and Tech teams to develop and refine the education technology platform and related systems.
Works with People Operations, the Regional Network, Event Operations, and other departments to help design content strategies for Burning Man conferences, seminars and retreats.
Helps strategize Burning Man conferences, seminars and retreats through learning experience design and content development. Presents and facilitates sessions as required.
Works closely with Documentation team to identify and archive live sessions that may be repurposed for online learning.
Manages post-event evaluation and feedback processes.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
Teacher – Develops and delivers presentations related to his/her area of expertise. Participates in formal and informal training, panels, and/or symposia. Represents the organization as a subject matter expert.
Learner – Tracks emerging trends, research, and thinking related to his/her area of expertise. Actively pursues new ideas and best practices that can expand the organization’s knowledge base.
Mentor – Aids, encourages, and inspires less-experienced members of the organization to expand their knowledge and skills. Trains other trainers. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community.
Minimum 7 years experience in a learning development role in a corporate, nonprofit, or higher education setting.
Minimum 3 years experience in online education/training.
Minimum 3 years experience as a volunteer, organizer, or creative contributor with the Burning Man event in Nevada or other official Burning Man events.
Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably education-related
A demonstrated understanding of Burning Man’s history and philosophy.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills. An accomplished writer, teacher, and facilitator.
Ability to adjust schedule seasonally to work at the Burning Man event held in Nevada.
Experience with multiple LMS environments and authoring tools.
Experience with Google Suite, Asana, and Slack.
Experience with video production, podcasting, and other audio/visual media.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Off-playa: Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.
On-playa: Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
