Position Title: Unix Systems Administrator II
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides day-to-day technical support for Unix servers and desktop systems at local and remote locations.
Participation in a frontline support rotation schedule. Respond to support cases created by both automated monitoring and directly by users.
Install, configure and troubleshoot server systems.
Maintains NIS/YP, LDAP and DNS within a highly standardized environment using wrapper scripts.
Assists in maintenance of network equipment, phones, and teleconference equipment.
Assist other teams within the Information Technology organization in the support of their projects, hardware and software
Assist in the support of the computer room and data center operations activities.
Assist with the deployment of virtualized servers.
Requires strong inter-personal and communication skills along with the ability to multi-task and solve problems independently. Able to interact with all levels of management and people with different styles. Strong customer focus is essential. Able to work in a high pressure and ever-changing environment. Fully proficient with most flavors of Unix operating systems including Linux and Solaris.
Fully proficient understanding of networking/TCP/IP.
General knowledge of job scheduling software from Univa Grid Engine and IBM/Platform LSF is a plus.
Thorough understanding of PC computer hardware and efficient troubleshooting techniques.
Ability to write and understand scripts written in PERL, and UNIX SHELLs such as Bourne or c-shell.
Ability to communicate highly technical information to both technical and nontechnical personnel.
Be able to conduct training programs designed to educate an organization’s computer users about basic and specialized applications.
Develops, documents, and implements standard operating procedures and customer service guidelines relating to IT support.
B.A. or B.S. with a minimum of 2 years of job related experience is preferred.
Ability to lift 40 pounds of hardware occasionally and/or the ability to move a negligible amount frequently in order to support a variety of office equipment.
This position includes engineering support of 3 local sites in the Ottawa and Kanata area and requires the ability to travel freely between them.
