OPEN COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION FOR: RESERVOIR AND WATERSHED OPERATOR
SALARY: $22.44 ~ $27.30/hr. (New hires start at the beginning of the range)

THIS POSITION IS ELIGIBLE FOR RESIDENCY POINTS.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
Monitors reservoir elevations and various flow readings to ensure normal operation;
Records statistical water data on forms and electronic equipment as required;
Recognizes unusual and abnormal reservoir and watershed conditions, makes necessary adjustments if appropriate, reporting anything extraordinary to the Environmental Resources and Water Quality Manager or Water Superintendent for necessary action;
Performs outside/inside maintenance as a member of a work crew or alone;
Operates pick-up trucks (with snowplows), multi axle dump trucks (with snowplows), farm tractors/mowers, walking tractors/mowers, backhoes and loaders;
Uses hand and power tools for clearing of woods, tree cutting, grass cutting, ice removal, snow removal, and other;
Operates and maintains valves at reservoirs and on transmission water mains as needed;
Maintains, repairs and sharpens equipment to ensure good working order;
Patrols the watershed for maintenance and security related issues and conditions and reports findings where necessary;
Maintains and cleans buildings in the reservoir complex;
Receives and transmits messages via voice radio;
Does other related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to understand routine phases of watershed and reservoir operations;
Ability to make accurate recordings of weather data (rainfall & temperatures), reservoir elevations, and flows, conduct routine inspections and to keep manual, computerized or electronic records and make routine reports;
Ability to use a variety of hand tools, lawn mowers, trimmers and cutting tools to include chain saws;
Ability to operate a variety of work vehicles under 5000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW);
Ability to use small gasoline powered watercraft;
Ability to perform work, including driving, under extremely adverse weather conditions;
Ability to work in confined spaces;
Ability to understand and follow safety rules and regulations including personal protective equipment;
Ability to utilize computerized, electronic and mechanical equipment;
Good physical condition
IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION YOU MUST INDICATE ON YOUR APPLICATION THAT AS OF THE CLOSING DATE YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING EXPERIENCE:
A high school diploma, GED, or its educational equivalent approved by the State’s Department of Education.

Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the controlling or purification of water at facilities in watershed areas, reservoirs, or aqueduct systems, or performing duties involving the upkeep, inspection, maintenance or operations of watershed areas and related facilities.
Possession of a valid State of Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with an excellent driving history. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment. (See Below)
***In order to verify possession of the appropriate Driver’s License and good driving history, applicants will now be required to provide the H.R. Office with a Driving History Report that is less than 30 days old. Only reports generated by the Department of Motor Vehicle will be accepted. This information will be specifically requested of the applicant at the time that a conditional offer is made. In the event that a report is not supplied, within Seven (7) days or the H.R. Director deems your driving history to be poor, the conditional offer may be rescinded.
All candidates shall be required to obtain and maintain any licensees, certifications, endorsements or training that the Agency deems necessary to perform the duties of the position.
SPECIAL NOTE: The job location is the Wigwam and Shepaug Reservoir Complex’s, Litchfield County, Connecticut.
This position is covered under the written agreement between the City of Waterbury and the Waterbury City Employees Local 353, American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO. The Parts and Weights for this examination will be determined prior to conducting the exam. Individuals appointed shall be required to serve a working test period which will be, in effect, the final phase of the examination.
APPEAL PROCESS: An applicant may appeal a notice of not meeting the minimum qualifications (Civil Service Rules and Regulations, Section 3741, Subsection B, Article 9) to the Civil Service Commissionwithin seven (7) days of receipt of such notice. Please notify the Civil Service Office of a change in address. Notification will be mailed to the address written on your application.
