HMI Hardwoods LLC is a North American hardwood lumber manufacturer, with over 40 years of experience. HMI sells kiln dried hardwood lumber and logs domestically and internationally. HMI is a fully-integrated hardwood lumber manufacturing operation. We purchase and harvest timber and saw lumber at our own mill. We dry, plane, rip and package our lumber within one facility. Although we produce green lumber, we also purchase approximately 1,500,000 feet of green lumber monthly from other Michigan, Ohio, Indian, Pennsylvania and Ontario mills. HMI Hardwoods employs an average of 110 employees.


Position Overview / Purpose

The Controller is responsible for managing the company’s accounting functions including establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures as well as preparation of financial statements and reporting to Sr. Management. The Controller also maintains the company’s accounting systems, implements changes as required and provides oversight, guidance and assistance to accounts payable staff.

Responsibilities and Primary Tasks

Monthly and Quarterly Reporting

  • Preparation & oversight of inventory reconciliations and valuations
  • Prepares and enters period end journal entries
  • Reconciles all accounts to ensure accuracy of reported amounts and prepares period end financial statements
  • Generates reports based on internal and external reporting requirements, including but not limited to various audits

Annual Reporting

  • Coordinates year end audit
  • Prepares year end statements and reconciliation.
  • Provides auditors with additional ad hoc reconciliations
  • Provides recommendations for procedural improvement

Prepares all monthly, quarterly and annual reporting packages to the Corporate Head Office which includes, financial statements, audit working papers, bank compliance, ad hoc reports and requests.

Accounts Payable

  • Preparation of monthly journal entries
  • Annual preparation of 1099’s

Accounts Receivable

  • Review credit applications and credit approval for new customers
  • Provides oversight, guidance and assistance to accounts receivable staff
  • Budgeting and Projections
  • Preparation and presentation of Annual department and company budgets


  • Formulates accounting policies procedures and controls
  • Provides regular coaching and mentoring to all staff within area of responsibility
  • Provides regular positive and negative feedback to all staff within area of responsibility to ensure a clear understanding of performance expectations
  • Conducts performance reviews and participates in the goal setting process for all staff within area of responsibility
  • Attends management meetings

Other responsibilities as assigned

Measures of Performance

  • To the degree that financial statements are produced accurately and on time
  • To the degree that receivables are collected quickly, and uncollectable accounts are minimized
  • To the degree that staff receive coaching and feedback on performance
  • To the degree that managers are supported in their budgeting, reporting and operational analysis responsibilities

Reporting Relationships

The Controller will report to the President

The Accounting department reports directly to the Controller

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in Cost Accounting Inventories
  • University degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum of 5 years progressive accounting experience
  • Experience with financial analysis, budgeting and overseeing audits
  • Previous experience supervising accounting staff

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Controller
  • Some experience in strategic planning
  • Experience in the manufacturing industries
