Smith Gardens has an exciting opportunity for a Spray Technician to join our team at our Marysville, WA site.
Smith Gardens is a Wholesale Nursery company that is headquartered in Bellingham Washington, and has been family owned for over 100 years with facilities in three states.
Opened in 1988, our Marysville location is the largest site of the Smith Gardens family consisting of 60 acres, with 500,000 square feet of greenhouse space. Marysville is the primary site for perennial production, but also grows mums, hanging baskets and annuals.
Responsible for the quality of our products as it relates to IPM. Scouting and proper application of chemical and/or biological controls to ensure plants meet our customers' expectations while advancing our mission to grow environmentally friendly plants.
Coordinates staff on the latest and safest practices in preventing and managing pests and diseases.
Apply, manage, and refine a comprehensive IPM plan including; bio controls, beneficial insects, natural predators, trapping, and spraying.
Assisting in the application; as well as coordination of pest management personnel to ensure that all employees who perform pest control have the necessary training, are equipped with the appropriate personal protective equipment, and have the tools to accomplish their responsibilities in a timely manner.
Train and coordinate with growing staff to scout crops for insect and disease pressure, reporting results to supervisor.
Fulfill WPS standards and compliance with aid and direction supervisor.
Keep records current and posted, including chemical sprays and drench applications.
Maintain SDS binder, pesticide label binder, and record any incidents or pesticide related complaints.
Serve as an active member of the safety committee.
Inventory, order, and maintain chemicals, and PPE.
Responsible for month end chemical inventory and year end chemical inventory.
Work as part of a team to oversee weekly weed management involving herbicide spot sprays.
Schedule, coordinate, and apply pre-emergent herbicide applications.
Assist in the application, coordination, and training of growing staff regarding proper technique and differences in applying Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) and crop protectants.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and in writing, in person, and via phone or radio with all levels of staff.
Bilingual (Spanish) preferred, both verbal and written.
Excellent organizing and planning skills.
Excellent problem solving and decision making abilities under pressure.
Work well with or without direct supervision.
Demonstrated ability to use and maintain spraying equipment.
Associate degree or equivalent technical certification.
Have at least 1 years’ experience in the field.
A valid pesticide applicator’s license must be obtained within 60 days of starting this position and kept current.
Work long hours as needed during busy season, including weekends.
Continuously walk, stand, bend, kneel (and remain working below knee-level) as well as reaching overhead, and from side to side for long periods of time.
Work indoors and outdoors, in seasonal temperatures and conditions.
Lift up to 50 pounds in an environment that is often hot.
