Assistant Home Editor, Property Brothers and the Rachael Ray magazine
I. Job Summary | Major goals and objectives.
Meredith Corporation is seeking an Assistant Home Editor to join its creative team to print and digital content across titles including the Rachael Ray and Property Brothers magazines. He/she will work closely with the Home Editor to conceive, pitch and produce home, product, decor, DIY and entertaining stories and features. Scouring the market for trends and innovations relevant to the brands and packaging them for the audience, he/she will be responsible for helping to shepherd stories from brainstorm to photo shoot to print. Ideal candidates will possess:
A love for all things home, lifestyle and entertaining, enthusiasm for the latest home gadgets and tools and an appreciation for DIY projects and crafts.
A knack for spotting emerging trends in the marketplace and the ability to translate them into fun, approachable stories for the RRED reader.
A creative, curious mind bursting with ideas.
Experience creating home, how-to and lifestyle content, a familiarity with lifestyle brands, and a contact list of PR reps, and stylists who specialize in bringing those stories to life.
A self-starting, go-getter spirit and love of collaboration. He/she will contribute big-picture ideas and work on projects that engage the readers across multiple platforms including web, social media and more.
A social media presence and desire to promote work via the website, digital videos and/or on social media platforms as needed.
II. Essential Job Functions
Accountabilities, Actions and Expected Measurable Results
Generates ideas, writes and/or assigns a mix of FOB and feature stories that focus on home, product, decor, DIY, entertaining and other lifestyle-related content for the magazine.
Represents the magazine at press events and takes meetings with product reps to stay on top of trends in the home and lifestyle markets. Organizes the lifestyle closet and all products. Maintains the department’s press and pubic relations contact databases. Oversees the search, hiring and management of department interns.
Regularly contributes ideas and/or content to our web team and maintains a strong presence across multiple social media platforms.
Attends photo shoots
III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.
Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism or Communications, or equivalent training and/or experience.
Minimum of 3 years editorial experience writing, assigning and editing, preferably at a consumer magazine or website
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of and an interest in home and lifestyle content is essential as is as the ability to tackle multiple projects while staying organized. The Home and Market Editor should possess strong research, reporting, writing and editing stills along with the ability to write lively and engaging copy and display text. Must be proficient in InCopy and all Microsoft Office programs. TV, web and social media experience is a plus.
