The internship program prepares students to obtain leadership roles on future political campaigns. Our program is both intensive and comprehensive by assigning interns to essential roles within the senior staff of a campaign. Our program focuses on main competencies including direct voter contact, electoral/organizational systems training, campaign business/operations/finance training, and becoming a diverse field director. Many of our previous interns have graduated from our program and get promoted to a management role on a campaign generally during an immediately following cycle.
Through our internship program, students will gain valuable skills that are crucial in the political sphere which include: how to be a consultant, how to operate vote builder, client management, an inside look at the workings of a political campaign, and how to be an organizer.
Direct Voter Contact:
Once a campaign plan has been set into a strategic ground game plan, the main goal of the campaign (despite the differences amongst our clients/candidates) and their respective districts) is to target a specific audience of voters. By selecting a specific audience, you continuously increase the effectiveness of your campaign by narrowing the amount of voters we engage with while matching up the voter to our projected win number voters. Our grassroots approach to campaigns has multiple aspects to it including identifying voter support, increasing voter turnout, and conducting polls. Identifying voter support can take two main forms: door to door canvassing and phone banking. We will train interns to maximize contact efforts through direct interaction and train them in a way to manipulate a conversation to lead up to a “hard ask,” which is a very direct and clear question addressed to voters. This information allows a campaign to target specific voters and communities to increase support for a candidate and boost turnout.
All political campaigns have various systems of data management and use different systems to control and analyze data. Interns will be trained to manage data including information obtained through direct voter contact and will learn how to critically analyze this data to formulate campaign strategy. Managing and analyzing this data will entail use of various software including excel and VAN.
One of the most important competencies to run an effective campaign, our internship program offers a unique opportunity for interns to try out various methods to improve a campaign’s efficiency at persuading voters to support a candidate. By learning how to formulate effective persuasive conversations, interns will be prepared to be leaders and take initiatives themselves.
