About our Strategy Team
Tembo has been a trusted provider of custom data tools and services in the K-12 education space for six years. We are in the midst of an exciting pivot towards being a more product-focused company, and our Strategy Team is at the center of making that happen. Our Strategy team reports to the Chief Strategy Officer, and is comprised of product managers, designers, marketing leads, and business development leads. Cumulatively, the team is charged with driving product ideation, definition, development, and deployment, and effectively articulating the value of a product and its features to potential customers, stakeholders, engineers, and analysts. This includes defining product roadmaps and features, managing product development work internally, ensuring that the products are well-captured in our business development and marketing efforts, and responding to emerging client and market needs.

About Your Role
Product Managers (PM) will be key players in refining our product roadmap, documenting requirements, developing a configuration workflow, and deploying high-quality products in this exciting transition period in our company’s history. As a PM, you will drive the definition of products in our accountability suite, a toolset that provides information about school and portfolio quality to the public, families, school leaders, and administrators. This tool suite includes a public school finder, online school/district profiles and scorecards, a performance framework simulation tool that helps state/district administrations design accountability systems, and a calculator tool that communicates accountability results to school/program leaders and enables them to plan towards simulated improvements.

You will be a critical player in ensuring that high-quality products are developed and/or executed, on-time, to the client specifications dictated by the Implementation Team. You will manage a collaborative product team of designers, data analysts, and developers towards this end, and will be responsible for representing the product teams in sprint planning and delivery negotiations, and for balancing priorities across multiple, concurrent streams of work. You will be most successful as a PM if you have strong technical, design, and business acumen, and can pivot quickly between high-level strategic discussions and very detailed, tactical implementation management. We need PMs that will bring an infectious energy to our team and an excitement for creating the best product experience for families, school leaders, and administrators.

What You’ll Do

Collaborate with product leadership to set product strategy and roadmaps
Work with product leadership in defining, communicating, and executing short and long-term product goals as articulated by a product roadmap aligned to Tembo’s business and organizational strategy
Write detailed product requirements, including user stories, functional requirements, data requirements, quality assurance plans, configuration workflows, and release checklists
Manage complex requirement dependencies between a suite of seven products and map the downstream implications of all change requests and feature enhancements
Collaborate with the client-facing Implementation Team, fellow product managers, designers, and developers to ensure that requirements and processes are accurately capturing client needs and are adequately equipping our cross-discipline team to do good work
Collaborate with the Implementation Team to collect feedback on product improvements, develop and define feature requests, define opportunities for user research and user testing, and create metrics for tracking product success

Own the overall success of a product’s definition, development, and deployment against client deadlines and internal goals
Manage both the technical process of (1) developing a new product and/or its versions, and (2) deployed configurations for client engagements
Manage the demands on our product teams, in the midst of competing priorities and concurrent deployments, in our agile development processes; this includes setting sprint goals, negotiating essential tasks, and managing a task backlog
Provide adequate direction to product teams of designers, developers, data analysts, and quality assurance analysts, and reinforce a culture of collaboration and strong communication by listening actively, speaking candidly, challenging assumptions, and encouraging others to seek you out for clarification and support

Create clear and accessible content (e.g. requirements text, workflow diagrams, visuals, compelling descriptions) about a product’s value and features to be used in marketing materials, proposals, scopes of work, and business development calls, meetings, and presentations.
Your Background
Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Business, Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields of study
5+ years of product or project management experience
Experience with K-12 education product management preferred
Demonstrated success with product launch, preferably in a start-up environment, including all stages of the product life cycle: conception, requirements gathering and documentation, development, quality assurance, launch, user testing, and features requests
Demonstrated success in writing clear user stories, requirements, user experience pathways/flow, and other technical documentation, both for v1 and additional releases
Experience working across multiple functional disciplines (e.g. management, content producers, engineering, operations, QA) to ensure on-time product delivery
Exceptional team management skills: the abilities to foster a sense of team accountability and high performance, and to drive process with diplomacy and enthusiasm
Demonstrated success at managing multiple concurrent, complex, and highly detailed product deployments on tight timelines and with priorities that could change on a regular basis
Evidence of excellent problem solving skills: you know how to determine what is important versus urgent, and can prioritize for maximum efficiency, but you also know when to consult others
Experience with agile development processes
Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, PPT, Word), Google Drive suite, Google analytics or other web analytics tools, agile development applications (Jira preferred), user testing tools a plus
