What is an IT Project Manager?
An experienced IT Project Manager carries out project management activities through the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to meet project requirements. This role manages projects, not the project resources.
What does an IT Project Manager do?
Effectively manages multiple project schedules and budgets using tools and techniques provided
Manages project scope, plans, issues and risks
Meets regularly with customers and team members regarding the status and priority of work
Communicates with all levels of the organization including technical teams and upper management
Works with the business and technical teams to understand complexities and provide estimates for work
Acts as a champion of IT Portfolio Management and PMO process improvements
Provides resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems
What does it take to be an IT Project Manager?
Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Administration or a related field of study) and at least 5 years of experience as a Project Manager of small, medium and large projects. In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, an Associate’s degree (preferably in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Administration or a related field of study) and at least 7 years of experience as a Project Manager of small, medium and large projects.
Experience using project scheduling software to manage project schedules, sometimes managing multiple project schedules in parallel
Experience executing projects within a PMO environment utilizing structured methodologies like Waterfall, Agile, etc.
Ability to work in a fast paced environment with minimal supervision and set and meet deadlines
High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including MS Project
Ability to participate in and lead strategic planning sessions
Experience managing outsourced vendor engagements
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong project and team leadership skills
Strong initiative and follow-up skills
Operational budgeting experience
Valid driver’s license
Master’s degree (in aforementioned fields)
Experience with Planview (formerly Innotas) PPM tool
PMP, CSM certifications
