The Control Systems Engineer is responsible for creating and maintaining software for controlling drilling rigs. A close working relationship with the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Quality Control and Field Service departments is required to provide them with high level technical support, installation /troubleshooting procedures, and upgrades related to the control systems. Control System Engineers participate in the definition, development, and deployment of control system software. This group also has a close association with other SLB technical departments to implement new technology into the existing control systems.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Control system upgrades: proof of concept, FMECA, implementation, test, and field deployment.
Interface with Field Service to provide high level technical support, control system upgrades and commissioning support on new products.
Interface with other SLB technical departments to implement new control system features and releases into existing control systems.
Interacts with the field service and production in order to obtain information necessary to complete job duties
Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. reports, procedures, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
Both office and remote work in the field may be required. Field assignments can be in remote, harsh environments. Some assignments will involve overseas travel; therefore a current passport is required for this position
Up to 25% of position may be travel; occasional weekend work; occasional long hours may be required during critical periods.
Lifting, climbing, standing, equipment and/or motor vehicle use.
Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Technology, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work experience.
Experience in the Oil and Gas Exploration Industry – or equivalent experience in heavy industries such as mining desirable
Experience with control systems design, testing, maintenance and troubleshooting desirable.
Configuration, programming, debugging, troubleshooting PLCs in ladder and/or structured text.
User interface development / SCADA experience desirable.
Experience working with drives and controls as an applications, design, or systems engineer.
A high level of programming methodology is required. Ability to concisely document software functionality using control-block diagrams and state diagrams.
Proven track record of analyzing problems to determine the root cause of control system failures.
High level of PC experience.
Understanding of serial communications when applied in noisy industrial environments.
Experience with HMI systems.
Wonderware experience desirable.
Ability to write concise functional design specifications, commissioning procedures, and software description documents.
Self-motivated control systems engineer, with excellent analytical and communications skills, able to work in a challenging multi-disciplined environment.
Must be able to legally work and reside in the US, without sponsorship.
