SSL is seeking an Assistant Controller to manage our day to day accounting activities. Located in Palo Alto the position will manage multiple accounting functions for our SSL operations, including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, tax compliance and general accounting. The position will report to SSL's Controller but will be the primary driver for day to day activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage multiple aspects of accounting - financial statements, general ledger, payroll, billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, tax compliance, inventory accounting, revenue recognition, and various special analyses.
  • Effectively manage a team of at least 8 people in Payroll, AP, AR and GL groups
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly/annual financial statements and reports, working closely with FP&A team and SSL's CFO
  • Manage the day to day accounting interface with SSL's parent company, Maxar
  • Responsible for SOX compliance, working with Maxar to update and execute on appropriate controls
  • Monitor cash and funding balances, working with Maxar on cash requirements and cash flow forecasts
  • Maintain an organized filing system of all trial balances, financial statements, account reconciliations, transactions, payments, and debts
  • Work with broader Finance team to create and monitor Overhead, G&A and Fringe cost pool rates for SSL's various lines of business.
  • Organize information and statements for audits and both internal and external auditors
  • Define, benchmark and implement operational best practices across accounting
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal laws regarding finances, tax filings, and reporting
  • Ensuring company complies with all additional legal and regulatory requirements
  • Masters degree in accounting, finance, business administration with an emphasis in accounting, or a related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in management level accounting role
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) license required
  • Prior experience with government accounting and managing disclosure statements desired
  • Strong understanding of percent complete revenue recognition desired
  • Prior experience with Oracle and Anaplan a big plus
  • Excellent computer skills; experience in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite; Access, database, or other system knowledge
  • Exceptional knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, cost accounting and cost control principles, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Able to work well with senior executives and team, as well as mentor/lead other team members
