Department of Water Management
These positions are open to the general public and to all current city employees covered under the terms of the City's collective bargaining agreement with U.O.A. BRICKLAYERS STONE MASONS LOCAL 21 (BU #49).
Total Vacancies: 3 Full-Time
These are seasonal positions.
Under supervision, lays bricks, concrete blocks, sewer pipes, and tile to construct and repair sewer mains and related appurtenances.
Builds and restores catch basins, gutter boxes, manholes and other appurtenances using brick, concrete block and tile.
Lays brick and rebuilds manholes and basins.
Directs assigned crew members in the excavation of street surfaces to locate broken or deteriorated sewer masonry.
Assesses extent of repair work required and determines materials and equipment needed to complete jobs.
Supervises laborers in the mixing of mortar prior to construction or repair work.
Repairs and replaces outlet and inlet pipes to facilitate water drainage.
Connects drain pipes and catch basins to main sewer lines and seals connections.
Builds templates and marks guidelines for the proper positioning of bricks.
Directs laborers in the loading of debris onto trucks and in the backfilling of excavated work sites to restore streets.
Ensures safety regulations and procedures at work sites are being followed.
Maintains project time and material records and prepares related reports (i.e., timesheets).
Performs related duties as required.

Hours: 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
THESE ARE SEASONAL POSITIONS
Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered bricklayer apprenticeship training program and journeyman status; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

This position requires applicants to complete a written test / skills assessment Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been analyzed and compiled. Applicants who receive a passing score on the test will be hired in lottery/random order; bid applicants will be selected in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement.

NOTE: This position requires candidate(s) to complete a Willing and Able questionnaire. Candidate(s) who affirmatively answer the Willing and Able questionnaire will be evaluated for further consideration.
VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE: The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. Eligible candidates must have at least six months of active duty documented. Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.
Evaluation: Your initial evaluation will be based on information provided on the application form and documents submitted with the application. Applications must be submitted by the individual applicant. No second party applicants will be accepted.
Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
