TITLE

R&D Packaging Engineer

REPORTS TO

Manager, Consumer Foods R&D

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead Executional Phase package development projects, collaborating with Products Research, Marketing Services, Product Development, Brand Management and external design agencies and suppliers in early stage new package and/or new product design; primary focus will be on retail food products
Provide innovative ideas leading to the application of new packaging technologies and solving packaging related challenges
Design, develop and implement new packaging, utilizing formats such as film/laminate, thermoforming, injection molding, glass jars, metal cans, paperboard and corrugated
Ability to direct R&D projects from conception through commercialization
Define and conduct package development testing to ensure readiness for production, distribution, package stability, shelf life and consumer use
Design and execute package qualifications with suppliers and production facilities
Plan, execute, analyze and summarize plant trials, collaborating with Manufacturing and site technical resources
Create performance-based specifications for upload into electronic database specification system
Advise and recommend equipment suppliers and service providers to cross functional organization in support of new product launches
Assess legal and environmental aspects, and patent opportunities for new packaging
Support production organization as needed to resolve packaging supply chain or production technical issues
Work independently with guidance only in complex situations
SELECTION CRITERIA

Education

A Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging, Packaging Engineering or Packaging Technology is required
Experience

At least 3 years of package development experience is required
Prior experience using thermoforming, plastic, and/or flexible packaging is preferred
Experience in the CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) industry is preferred
Other

Knowledge of basic package qualification test procedures
Project management experience, ability to operate as technical lead on projects
Strong organizational, critical thinking and creativity skills
Effective presentation, verbal and written communication skills
Ability to stand for long periods of time
Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
Ability to travel up to 30% is required
