The Health Information Officer plans, organizes, and directs Health Information activities/processes throughout the hospital. The individual ensures the proper ICD-10 CM coding of patient diagnoses (in Meditech system) upon admission, discharge and as needed. S/he also provides guidance to the medical and clinical staff regarding documentation to assure compliance with CMS certification, state licensure and TJC accreditation. In addition s/he oversees all ongoing activities related to the development, implementation, maintenance of and adherence to the organization 's policies and procedures related to the privacy of, and access to, Protected Health Information (PHI) in compliance with Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children information privacy practices and policies. The Health Information Officer will serve as Privacy Officer, and be responsible for ensuring the hospital’s policies, procedures, and practices remain in compliance with applicable federal and state laws. The individual will also oversee the preparation and integrity of hospital statistical reports and documentation audits.
For this function: Registration as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) by the American Health Information Management Association necessary.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 40 hours per week, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm
3-5 years’ experience working in health information field
Knowledge of and participation in Joint commission and CMS surveys
Experience using an electronic medical record, i.e. Meditech
The Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children (PRHC) is a Joint Commission (TJC) accredited; pediatric chronic care hospital serving children and young adults (ages 7 – 22+) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). Located on 160 acres in Canton Massachusetts, this pediatric chronic care hospital provides medical, rehabilitative, educational, recreational, habilitative, transitional, and complementary alternative medical services to children and young adults with multiple disabilities, assisting them to achieve their optimal level of independence in all aspects of life. All PRHC patients have chronic and highly medically complex conditions including primary diagnoses of cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, and other metabolic / neuromuscular disorders. Patient secondary diagnosis for specific complications or comorbidities include: epilepsy / convulsive seizure disorders, periventricular leukomalacia, anoxic brain damage, and disorders of mitochondrial metabolism. The hospital provides 24-hour skilled nursing with medical and rehabilitative services provided according to a plan of care and has a current inpatient capacity of 93 beds.

Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, administrative, supervisory or managerial experience in business administration, business management, public administration, financial management, or professional experience in a particular specialty (i.e. scientific, professional, or technical), and (B) of which one year must have been in a supervisory or managerial capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver’s license at a class level specific to assignment.
I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in business administration, business management, public administration, financial management, or degree related directly to the specialty may be substituted for two years of the required (A) experience.
II. A Graduate or higher degree with a major in business administration, business management, public administration, financial management, or degree related directly to the specialty may be substituted for three years of the required (A) experience.
II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major other than in business administration, business management, public administration, financial management, or degree related directly to the specialty may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.
