Nursing Assistant I/II-Regular & Per-Diem Pool

Under general supervision of a licensed nurse, is responsible for performing a variety of support functions for professional staff involved in in-patient nursing services throughout Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital and for performing other related work as required.

The Per Diem Pool (PDP) classifications are distinguished from the Regular classifications in that the incumbents in these classifications receive limited benefits. They will receive shift differential, standby and callback premium pay and will participate in the Ventura County Employees' Retirement Association if they are assigned a biweekly work schedule of 64 hours or more. Incumbents hired into these positions are not guaranteed any specific number of work hours per biweekly pay period, and management has the authority to relieve them from duty when there is insufficient work.

Nursing Assistant I: $13.11 - $17.57 per hour
Nursing Assistant II: $13.67 - $18.87 per hour
Nursing Assistant I-PDP: $15.48 per hour
Nursing Assistant II-PDP: $16.67 per hour

EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive. This incentive may be 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification.

BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending on the applicable memorandum of agreement and the needs of the department. In order to qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination with a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher.

Nursing Assistant I/II and Nursing Assistant I/II-PDP are represented by the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Per Diem Pool, Intermittent, and Extra-help vacancies. There is currently one (1) Intermittent vacancy.

NOTE: If appointed at the lower level, incumbent may be promoted to the higher level without further examination upon meeting the minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and in accordance with the business needs of the department.

Examples Of Duties:
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Takes blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration of patients;
Prepares patients and assists in their feeding;
Weighs, bathes, and dresses patients; performs oral hygiene; changes linens and makes patients' beds;
Performs routine patient care and performs postmortem duties and responsibilities;
Passes bedpans and operates mechanical lifts;
May chart patient vital signs, intake, and out-put; observes and reports any unusual circumstances or changes in patient condition;
May provide limited clerical support;
Transports patients as needed for admission, discharge, procedures, etc.;
Assists with ambulatory patients;
Maintains a safe environment;
Incumbents at the higher level may provide some support in a critical care area; and
Performs other related duties as required.

These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

Any combination of education and experience which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience for each level includes:

Nursing Assistant I
Three (3) months of experience in a licensed nursing facility or other comparable work experience or educational coursework in a health care related field.

Nursing Assistant II
At least six (6) months of experience as a Nursing Assistant I at the Ventura County Medical Center or comparable work experience.

A valid Nursing Assistant Certification (CNA Certificate) issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs OR successful completion of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training program, approved by the State of California may substitute for the required experience.

Depending upon area of assignment, specific positions may require a valid Nursing Assistant Certification (CNA Certificate) issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs OR successful completion of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training program, approved by the State of California.
Candidates must have a valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certificate prior to the first day of employment and maintain it thereafter.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge and ability to: apply methods, procedures, and equipment utilized in nursing assistant work to provide direct patient care; maintain the confidence of and effective relationships with staff and patients; and work in various departments as required. In some cases, Nursing Assistants may be trained for phlebotomy and electrocardiogram.

Supplemental Information: Duties require frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, and kneeling, and the ability to move, position, and lift patients and/or equipment to perform nursing assistant duties/procedures.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION – 100%: A job-related written examination will be conducted to evaluate and compare participating candidates' knowledge of general patient care. Candidates must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
