Ensure safe and effective operation of the chemistry, physics, and geology science labs by faculty, staff and students.
Duties and Responsibilities
Prepare solutions, equipment, supplies, and other items needed for labs. Ensure safety protocol is followed by assisting instructors during lab sessions. Ensure lab, chemical storage, and equipment rooms are kept in an organized, safe and clean manner. Work with lab staff, assistant dean, faculty, and office staff to identify items needed and assist in ordering and receiving. Keep an accurate inventory of chemicals and supplies. Periodically assist natural science lab staff. Provide accurate accounting of expenditures of supplies, equipment, and materials for chemistry, physics, and geology labs.
Supervise part-time lab staff for chemistry, physics, and geology labs.
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field or equivalent working experience OR combination of training, education or experience. Prior Inventory experience.
Master’s degree in Chemistry or related field. Several years of laboratory experience. Prior Community college lab experience Preferred. Physics, geology, or biology lab experience Preferred. Prior experience working with a budget.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
A working knowledge of complex scientific principles and laws, and a variety of laboratory analysis equipment. Ability to set up first and second year labs in chemistry. Knowledge of preparation of labs for physics and geology. Knowledge of safety issues: MSDS, OSHA standards pertaining to science labs, personal protective equipment, hazard assessment and abatement, chemical waste management and chemical storage. Knowledge of basic repair for some laboratory equipment. Basic computer skills, including Windows, word processing, spreadsheets, internet and email. Must be self-motivated, possess an excellent ability to communicate, and good prioritizing skills along with the ability to work closely with a diverse faculty and student body. Excellent organizational skills.
