The City of Portage is offering the written exam on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 to create a candidate pool for 1 current full-time opening and future full-time positions.
Duties include responding to fire alarms and other emergency calls, controlling and extinguishing fires, protecting life and property, fire code inspections, maintaining and operating equipment, public education and other related duties. The City of Portage currently runs approximately 74% emergency medical calls. 24 hour shifts. 2-3 days per week based on rotation.
Starting salary is $46,080/year with an excellent benefit package.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Position Requirements - Candidates must meet the following requirements:
State of Michigan certified in Firefighter Level I and II
Certified in Hazardous Materials Operations
Licensed as an EMT Basic at minimum
High school graduate or equivalent, Associates Degree in Fire Science desired
18 years of age
Possess a Michigan driver license with a good record
Have ability to pass the Physical Agility Test
Have ability to pass a background check
Have ability to pass a post-offer pre-employment physical
Have ability to pass a post-offer pre-employment psychological evaluation
Must reside within 20 miles of the Portage city limits
Applicants who have met the minimum qualifications are invited to take an entry level firefighter exam at 6:00 P.M. on November 20, 2019 at Portage City Hall in Council Chambers. Candidates must call to sign up for the test at (269) 329-4533.
Study guides will be available in Human Resources on a first come first serve basis once we have received an application and registration for the written exam. For those who have received the study guide before or wish to have one sent they can be ordered through IPMA-HR at the link below.
