The Candidate
The Discipleship loves people and is passionate about helping individuals take their next steps toward a growing relationship with Jesus. You are focused on helping people build community through participation in small groups and church life.
The Position
This Discipleship Pastor oversees the church’s small groups and Connect Steps systems of the church. The Discipleship Pastor will be part of the church’s executive leadership team; working with the Lead Pastor and other ministry leaders to ensure that there is a clear and effective discipleship process in the church.
The Discipleship Pastor is responsible for ensuring the congregation is connecting with one another and building community through a vibrant and growing small group ministry. This includes the development and execution of an annual growth plan, group leader identification, recruitment and training, small group curriculum development, and ongoing leadership and coaching of group leaders.
The Responsibility
The role of the Discipleship Pastor is to lead and oversee the development, of our small group system and Connect Steps. The vision of The Connect Church is to be a church of small groups rather than a church with small groups. We believe in a free market system of small groups.
Experience and Knowledge Required:
- Experience leading a church small group and overseeing a network of small groups.
- Experience leading volunteer leaders who lead teams/ groups.
- Passion for the mission of The Connect Church.
- Ability to identify, utilize and analyze ministry health assessment tools to enhance ministry effectiveness
- Experience serving in a life-giving church with at least 500 people.
- Spiritually mature and biblically grounded Christian.
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to learn and use Planning Center Online software.\
- Bachelor’s degree is preferred but not required.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
1. Develop systems to create and grow a “groups minded” culture that results in a strong small group ministry.
2. Develop and maintain an annual plan that ensures continuous improvement and growth of small group involvement.
3. Lead, shepherd, and mentor small group leaders, ensuring a healthy environment.
4. Plan and execute regular small group connection events as a means of bridging the gap between attraction environments and deepening environments (small groups).
5. Function as overall leader of all small groups, coaching small group leaders in the successful completion of their day-to-day duties and responsibilities.
6. Plan and execute regular small group leader training and recognition events, ensuring the existence of a healthy body of small group leaders upon which to grow a strong small groups ministry.
7. Create promotional materials and methods that ensure everyone at the church is aware of the small groups’ ministry, its purpose and importance, and how to get connected.
8. Identify, develop, and/or select small group curriculum and other small group study materials and tools.
9. Design, select, coordinate and promote book/movie/topic series for small groups
10. Function as a member of the church’s pastoral staff performing baptism services, weddings, funerals, etc. as part of a rotation schedule.
11. Assist in the development of an annual departmental budget and manage spending to budget.
12. Attend weekly lead team meetings and other leadership training events.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- This position requires a minimum of 2 years of experience as a staff member in a ministry leadership capacity.
- Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in biblical studies or a related field is required. (Extensive ministry experience, in some cases, can be substituted.)
- A strong leader with a solid work ethic and ability to lead a department.
- A working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Planning Center is plus.
