The Director, Scientific Communications oversees the development and execution of strategic publication plans for all Avanir products and therapeutic areas. As part of their role, the Director is responsible for all aspects of publications development and accountable for meeting publication development timelines/deadlines, including hands-on project management and in-depth scientific knowledge. As part of responsibilities for publications development for Avanir, this individual ensures compliance with the corporate publications policy and standard operating procedures and with external guidelines on good publication practices. Additionally, the Director updates internal stakeholders on publication-related activities. The Director will work closely with the therapeutic area medical director and participate in cross-functional team meetings to ensure alignment of the publications with the overall Medical strategy and communication objectives.
Essential Job Functions:
Develop and/or oversee the development of the strategic publication plans for Avanir research and marketed products
Ensures that publication plans, and priorities are aligned with overall Medical strategy, congress plan and communication objectives
Oversee and drive the execution of publications
Coordinates meetings, and leads discussions, of cross-functional Core Publication Plan Team to develop publication plans which are in accordance with the overall Medical Strategy; publication plan is revised annually
Liaises with key functions in Avanir and external medical communications agencies, to ensure alignment regarding content development
Works with agency to develop initial draft publication strategy, and coordinates review and approval of the strategic publication plan and tactics
Ensure development of publications compliant with the internal and/or external policies and SOPs. Responsible for all activities conform to ethical standards and industry guidelines (e.g., ICMJE and GPP)
Coordinate the development of publications (journal articles, abstracts, and medical meeting presentations) reporting scientific and clinical data
Leads Core Publication Plan Team meetings
Reviews draft abstracts, posters, slides, and manuscripts critically for content
Coordinates meetings to discuss conflicting comments on manuscripts
Follow-up with agency regarding the status of manuscripts in development
Manage medical communications agency
Oversee agency maintenance of documents in publication planning software, Pubs Hub; responsible for consistency, accuracy, and currency of documentation in Pubs Hub.
Provide regular updates on publication activities
Ensure bibliographies are updated regularly and maintained
Develop/Oversee the development and creation of literature updates
Manage the publication budget supporting multiple products and scientific activities
Report publication metrics on key objectives to TA Medical Director and VP, Medical Affairs
Provide strategic direction and management of publications staff
Bachelor’s degree required with a preference in life science, business, journalism, or communication; Master’s degree or higher in related field preferred.
At least 15+ years' relevant experience, including 8+ years management experience
Able to successfully work independently and with a team.
Knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry with a broad range of therapy understanding, and an understanding of the drug development process
Proficiency with Word, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft packages is required. A familiarity with Pubs Hub desired
Presents clearly and confidently to the highest level of audience
Keeps up to date with publication planning processes in order to apply to day to day activities
Ability to manage multiple projects at one time
Ability to manage all components of a strategic communication program
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
