The Department of Parks and Recreation has 8 aquatic facilities to include: 2 indoor pools, 4 community pools and 2 waterparks. The aquatics department serves over 400,000 visitors a year. The Lifeguard II/Pool Operator position is responsible for ensuring patron safety in and around an aquatic facility and responding to emergency situations as required. This individual will be responsible for monitoring and ensuring proper water chemistry. Requires current Pool Operator Certification and Ellis & Associates ILTP license. Parks and Recreation aquatic facilities are a 7 day a week operation which requires a flexible work schedule to include: early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays. Must be at least 16 years old. Lifeguard II operators are needed at the following locations: SplashDown, Waterworks, Community Pools, Sharron Baucom Dale City Rec Center, Chinn Aquatic Fitness Center and Veterans Memorial Park.
The Department of Parks & Recreation conducts DMV records checks on all employees driving for work purposes and criminal background checks on all hires age 18 years and older.

General Definition of Work, Typical tasks, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Ensures the safety of patrons of an aquatic facility by preventing and responding to emergencies, performing routine maintenance on pool and filter system and ensuring proper water chemistry.

Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency;
Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services;
Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility;
Enforces pool rules;
Ensures proper water chemistry;
Maintains equipment such as filters, pumps, chemical feeders, etc. and maintains appropriate logs and activity reports;
Performs safety and equipment inspections;
Maintains skills at test ready levels at all times.
Supervises lifeguards and pool activities in absence of Head Lifeguard/Pool Operator;
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to communicate effectively with the general public and to work in a team environment; proven leadership and problem solving skills; ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; skilled in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a tenth grade education. Certified in Ellis and Associates Lifeguarding, CPR-PR, AED, Oxygen administration and First Aid. Certified Pool Operator with a valid Prince William County Pool Operators license and one season lifeguard experience.
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls;
Must have physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine;
Significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and repetitive motions;
Able to swim 200 yards, tread water for 2 minutes without use of hands, and must be able to retrieve a brick from a depth of 10 feet of water.
