The Perioperative Registered Nurse (RN) delivers nursing care for perioperative patients across their life span, and through the nursing process, develops, implements and evaluates a nursing plan of care. Works cooperatively with ancillary, nursing and other patient-team personnel to maintain standards for professional nursing practice. These nursing functions of the RN are carried out according to the Pennsylvania Nurse Practice Act, hospital policy, the hospital Mission Statement and the Philosophy of the Department of Nursing.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the RN.
Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
Provides and maintains a safe environment for the perioperative patient as addressed in the Hospital Policy and Procedure Manuals and in AORN Standards and Recommended Practices.
Demonstrates clinical proficiency in perioperative nursing including respectful and accurate handling of surgical tissue specimens.
Demonstrates ability plan and implement care by ensuring appropriate supplies, instruments, implants and equipment are available for procedures in a safe and efficient manner.
Demonstrates ability to review patient information thoroughly and appropriately ensuring documentation is accurate, available and compliant.
Applies knowledge of procedures in the delivery of care using critical thinking skills.
Demonstrates ability to function successfully in scrub role as identified in CST job description and as it relates to scrubbing, gowning, gloving, preparing instruments,& suture, implementing surgical asepsis, safety precautions , counts and cost effective safe care.
Demonstrates ability to function successfully in a clinical role as a circulating nurse – duties as it relates to opening sterile supplies, maintaining counts, implementing surgical asepsis, safety precautions, cost effectiveness and safe care.
Demonstrates to work collaboratively with anesthesia colleagues and maintain safe environment for patients during this time
Demonstrates flexibility in relation to staff assignments, shift assignments and all department staffing needs including on call expectations.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Sit up to 2 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Stand for up to 10 hours per day; 8 hours at a time. Walk 6 hours per day; 10 minutes at a time. Consistently lift, carry and push objects up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lift, carry and push objects up to 75 lbs. Transports patients weighing up to 500 lbs. via wheelchair, bed and/or stretcher. Frequently stoop and bend. Frequently reach above should level. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation and high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision.
Current RN license in the State of Pennsylvania.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
One year medical/surgical experience preferred. Individualized orientation program for all areas. Evidence of successful completion of BLS.
