The Organization

Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Greater Washington, D.C. (RMHCDC) has been serving families in the Greater Washington, D.C. area for over 35 years. Our mission is to ease the hardship of children’s illness on families. We do this through three core programs (RM Houses, RM Family Rooms, RM Care Mobiles) that focus on the critical needs of children, celebrating the diversity of the donors who make them possible, staying true to our heritage of responsible stewardship, and operating with accountability and transparency.

The Position

The Receptionist is a vital front-line position, responsible for providing families and visitors with a warm and friendly first impression of the Ronald McDonald House in Washington, DC. This person supports the House Manager in answering phones, greeting and helping families, and assisting with group/volunteer visits. The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal, interpersonal and computer skills, and be calm and tactful when faced with difficult circumstances. He/she must be willing to jump in and lend a hand, whether it be giving a tour of the house, or helping clean up the kitchen.

Success in this position will require a passion for the mission of the organization and the families it serves. It will require the ability to work with families, staff members, donors and a diverse volunteer population.

This is a part-time position, located at the Washington, DC Ronald McDonald House, requiring 20 hours per week. Regular schedule will be 9:00 am – 1:00 pm, Monday – Friday.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Greet families and assist with check-in and check-out; respond to requests as needed;
  • Answer telephones, answer questions, and direct calls to staff;
  • Receive, sort and forward incoming & outgoing deliveries (including mail, fax, FedEx, UPS, etc.);
  • Assist with common space or room cleanups as needed;
  • Maintain fax machine, photocopier and postage meter;
  • Use house access control and camera systems to help ensure house safety;
  • Enter data in GRMHIS database system;
  • Order office supplies and stock supply room;
  • Photocopy documents, prepare mailings and assist with other projects as requested;
  • Act as point of contact to volunteer groups coming to the house, providing tours as needed;
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the charity to be able to respond to inquiries and answer questions of guests;
  • Provide backup to House Manager in their absence;
  • Handle details of a highly confidential and critical nature;
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent experience;
  • Previous experience working in a non-profit environment preferred
  • 2+ years of administrative experience;
  • Capacity and motivation to develop an in-depth understanding of RMHC’s programs and services;
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills with attention to detail;
  • Ability to provide high-quality customer service;
  • Ability to prioritize, take initiative, and work well under sometimes difficult circumstances;
  • Ability to work effectively and independently, as well as in a team;
  • Willingness to accept and take on new challenges;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word and Excel)
