Trains and supervises inspectors in sampling and testing materials, batching and placing concrete, inspecting sub-grade and base materials. Some materials includes; obtaining fine and coarse aggregate samples from stock piles, cement samples from silo bens, making concrete test cylinders, tests soil and macadam base course for density requirements utilizing nuclear gauge. Collects samples of construction materials (aggregate, soil, concrete, reinforcing steel, etc.) to ensure compliance by the department contractors on SCDOT projects. Coordinates work of utility contractors. May be required to conduct regularly scheduled meetings with construction contractors and utility contractors. Performs inspections on department construction projects to ensure compliance with standard specifications for highway construction, contract documents, and construction plans. Inputs information daily into site manager. Using the same program, creates final plans for payments to contractors. Ensures the accuracy of work of inspectors in all pay quantities, etc. Performs other related duties as required.
A high school diploma and four (4) years of progressively responsible engineering technician related experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence in accordance with State Human Resources Regulations. Attainment of a Technician Certification in accordance with the SCDOT Technician Certification Policy may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
