The Certified Medical Coder will be responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and coding diagnostic and New York Proton Center procedural information that determine insurance payments. The coding function is a primary source for data and information used at NYPC, and promotes provider/patient continuity, accurate database information, and the ability to optimize reimbursement. The person in this role will ensure compliance with established coding guidelines, third party reimbursement policies, regulations and accreditation guidelines. Previous radiation oncology experience will be beneficial for this role.
Duties and Responsibilities
Analyzes and interpret the medical record in its entirety to ensure accurate, complete and consistent selection of diagnoses
Reviews all charges associated with visits and treatments according to Medicare and/or payer – LCD guidelines.
Ensures modifiers are present when necessary for technical and/or professional charges based on coding guidelines.
Ensures proper documentation is present and signed in medical record to support all charges as well as additional documentation when special procedures are reported by the physicians.
Assisting in claims follow-up, denial management and collection
Assures the production of quality healthcare data and accurate facility payment
Ensures timely follow-ups with physician queries to ensure all encounters are coded in a timely manner
Provides departmental defined billing reports
Comply with all New York Proton Center policies related to Privacy Rules established under the Health Information Privacy and Portability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)
Perform other job-related duties, as assigned
Minimum 3 year of experience with charge entry and ICD-10 coding
Active coding certification of CPC
Radiation oncology experience preferred
Previous experience with compliance, guidelines and regulations of HIPAA, False Claims Act, and Fair Debt Collections Act
Familiarity with an automated medical record tracking systems
