QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a high school diploma or its equivalency and at least four years’ experience at journeyman level, in the fabrication, installation and repair of sheet metal products and equipment. Considerable knowledge of various metals and their properties and considerable skill in working from blueprints, schematics and sketches and in interpreting instructions, guidelines, regulations and polices. Must have a valid Virginia Driver’s License.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: Fabricates, installs and repairs sheet metal products and equipment. Works from plans, sketches and/or oral instructions to take field measurements, layout, fabricate and install sheet metal objects. Sets up and operates all sheet metal shop equipment to include: hydraulic shears, electric spot welder, apron brake (manual), drill press, lock forming machine (electrical) oxy-acetylene torch, combination electric and heliarc welding machine, gasoline driven welding machine, digital tachometer. Fabricates and installs all of, but not limited to, the following: building ducts and stacks for high pressure gas and oil furnaces; vent pipe of various sizes for domestic hot water heating systems; railings of all types for interior and exterior walkways and stairways, including those required by State codes for walkways and ramps used by the handicapped; and guards and protective covers over belts and pulleys on air compressors and machines with moveable parts. Installs, maintains and repairs cafeteria sheet metal specialty items such as range hoods. Plans and fabricates security screening, hardware and other protective devices. Installs access and cleans out doors in smoke stacks and exhaust fans for ventilation. Lays out, fabricates and installs duct work for heating cooling and ventilating systems; installs coils and fans; and fabricates and installs drain pans for air conditioning units. Repairs and/or maintains roof vents and fan covers, playground equipment all types of school bleachers, school lockers, hall fire doors and security gates. Fabricates parts needed by other shops in their work and for yard and ground equipment, school lockers and other equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK: Work requires lifting and carrying 20 lbs. frequently and 50-100 lbs. occasionally for short distances or with the aid of load bearing equipment. Must have sufficient strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks of lifting, stooping, bending, and carrying sheet metal equipment and materials to and from work sites. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker may be subjected to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a respirator. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
