The Senior Accountant is responsible for preparing monthly journal entries, reconciling accounts, documenting business transactions, and maintaining a sound internal control structure.

Supports and encourages coworkers to act professionally and appropriately. Works closely with management and staff throughout the Hospital to answer questions, explain financial reporting, and solve issues and problems as they arise.

Required to promote and adhere to Ingalls Core Values, Ingalls Missions and the seven Ingalls Performance Standards of Service. Mentors and trains new employees and serves as a resource for all members of the department and hospital management.

Essential Job Functions:
a. Prepare monthly financial statements, including balance sheets, statements of income, statements of cash flows and statements of changes in net assets.

b. Prepare monthly journal entries and directs the monthly closing process.

c. Compile and analyze financial information to prepare journal entries and document business transactions.

d. Monitor and review accounting and related system reports for accuracy and completeness.

e. Prepare and review budget, revenue, expense, asset, liability, invoices and other accounting documents.

f. Analyze revenue and expenditure trends and recommend appropriate budget levels and expenditure control.

g. Supervise the input and handling of financial data and reports for the financial systems.

h. Reconcile accounts on a monthly basis.

i. Appraise, evaluate, and inventory real property and equipment, recording information such as the property’s description, value, and location.

j. Assists annual department budget process.

k. Prepares and maintains executive payroll functions

l. Prepare ACH outgoing transactions.


a. Maintain confidentiality of employee and patient information.

b. Train new staff members.

c. Mentor staff members.

d. Serve as resource for accounting, payroll, and accounts payable staff.

a. Explain billing invoices and accounting policies to staff, vendors and clients.

b. Resolve accounting discrepancies.

c. Directs external audit process.

d. Interact with external auditors and consultants to complete audits/projects.

e. Report to management on monthly financial results.

f. Adhere to Ingalls Seven Standards of Service for behavioral expectations


a. Establish, maintain, and coordinate the implementation of accounting and accounting control procedures.

b. Recommend, develop and maintain financial databases, computer software systems and manual filing systems.

c. Survey operations to ascertain accounting needs and to recommend, develop, and maintain solutions to business and financial problems.

d. Utilizes knowledge gained from educational programs in everyday work situations.

IV. Additional Job Functions:

Physical/Position Demands:
Physical demands of the position are light, mostly sedentary with some walking with the office and to and from other departments; visual acuity to record information accurately; and ability to operate standard office equipment.

Required Skills

Bachelor’s degree in accounting and 5+ years of accounting/finance experience. CPA or CPA candidate is a plus.
