This internship is located in the Policy and Best Practices Service in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support. The intern is under the supervision of the team leader of the Knowledge Management and Guidance team. The internship is for 4 months with the possibility for extension up to 6 months. The internship is unpaid. Interns work 5 days a week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities will include but not limited to:
assistance in conducting research for lessons learned studies on a broad range of issues related to peacekeeping including peacekeeping reform, administration and management of peacekeeping operations, financing, etc.; providing support to knowledge management initiatives and projects; assistance in the upkeep of the Interdepartmental Policy and Best Practices Database; assistance in preparing reports, newsletters, policy documents and other materials related to the work of the Policy and Best Practices Service; attending and taking notes of meetings; assistance to conferences and workshops.

Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second-level university or higher); be enrolled in the final academic year of a first level university degree programme (minimum Bachelors or equivalent); or have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Be computer literate in standard software applications; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme but experience with the peacekeeping operations is an advantage.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Fluency in French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
