These positions are open to the general public and to all current city employees covered under the terms of the City's collective bargaining agreement with the AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) –(BARGAINING UNIT #01, 03, 04, 05)

Under supervision, performs at the fully functional level, providing technical support on moderately complex personal computer (PC) and PC network malfunctions, and performs related duties as required
Responds to calls to the help desk and escalated calls from first-level response, asking questions and obtaining information from users that will assist in assessing the extent of software and hardware problems experienced
Monitors the network via a terminal to read and view files on servers and to conduct varied connectivity tests to isolate and identify source of personal computer and network malfunctions
Responds to moderately complex questions and assists users on computer and software related issues (e.g., setting up E-mail accounts/usernames/passwords, accessing the Internet, operating personal computers and software)
Assists users and resolves problems of a more complex nature relating to gaining access and using mainframe, Oracle, and other software applications on the network
Troubleshoots and resolves a wide range of connectivity, hardware, and software problems
Travels to field sites to independently troubleshoot network problems and resolve hardware and software malfunctions, as required
Completes work orders to document work performed
Instructs users in the operation of new or upgraded software applications
Sets up computer workstations and peripheral equipment and loads and tests software packages onto PCs
Oversees lower-level employees and managed services staff members

Location: Office of Public Safety, 3510 S. Michigan Ave
Days: Monday - Friday
Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE
Fifteen semester hours in Computer Sciences or Information Technology/Systems, plus two years of experience in performing technical support functions, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
Proficiency with Microsoft Windows server administration and user administration
Previous work experience in a user support role
Previous public safety experience
Experience in supporting a Microsoft Windows environment
VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE: The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. Eligible candidates must have at least six months of active duty documented. In order to receive the veteran’s preference, candidates need to indicate whether or not they are a veteran by answering “yes” or “no” to the question on the online application that asks, “Are you currently serving on active duty for at least six months in the Armed Forces of the United States OR have you served in the Armed Forces of the United States on active duty for at least six months and received an honorable or general discharge?” In addition, you must attach documentation to verify your military service. For veterans, you must attach a copy of your DD214 (Member Copy-4) to your online application which includes character of service status OR a letter from the United States Veterans Administration on official stationery stating dates of service and character of service. For active military personnel, you must attach a letter from your Commanding Officer on official stationery verifying your active duty, length of service, and character of service in the Armed Forces of the United States AND a copy of your military ID to your online application. Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.
