A reporter is needed for the award-winning weekly newspaper in Poweshiek County, Iowa, to cover a growing county, three schools and the communities of Brooklyn and Montezuma, plus the college community of Grinnell.

This reporter is expected to find and develop exclusive stories, take photos and video and post content that will appear across mobile, desktop and social media platforms as well as print. He or she will use metrics to understand what’s resonating with readers and will shape coverage to increase audience.

Source development is critical to this position. The reporter will cultivate relationships with city and county officials, business leaders and community stakeholders to break stories.

The reporter will be equipped to work from home or to file from the road. An ideal candidate would enjoy working independently and embrace rural and small-town life. Yet the Des Moines metro, with its active arts scene and vibrant community of young professionals, is just an hour away. This job could be a good first job for a new college graduate or a place for a veteran journalist who enjoys rural life to put down roots long-term.

The Poweshiek County Chronicle Republican is part of Des Moines Register Media, and the reporter will work with three other weeklies in eastern Iowa. He or she will enjoy the full Gannett benefits package, can access training provided to the Des Moines staff and will have the occasional opportunity to have content published in the print Register and its online platforms.

Candidates should have previous college or professional publishing experience. Please submit clips.
