An Occupational Safety Associate applies deep technical knowledge in occupational safety/occupational hygiene to anticipate, recognize and control risks to enhance the Safety Culture and workforce productivity. Safety Associates partner with employees at all levels of the organization to advance the performance of the Mayo Clinic Safety Management System.
Under the general supervision of the Occupational Safety Administrator, the Occupational Safety Associate will spend the majority of their time working to achieve established goals of the work unit. The majority of their time will be spent providing comprehensive safety, industrial hygiene and ergonomic support to Mayo Clinic's integrated clinical practice, research and education endeavors in Rochester, MN. Additionally, time will be spent with administrative duties as assigned, including budget and resource allocation, and assisting with facilitation of staff involved with safety-related projects. Identifies and assists with the implementation of creative ideas and suggestions to improve systems, processes and service, development and implementation of new policies and procedures, and implementation of educational programs; evaluates established procedures and educational programs for effectiveness. Performs and assists others with the development and facilitation of safety audits, hazard assessments and building inspections, including the interpretation of results, identification and implementation of solutions. Analyzes and interprets data and participate in decisions regarding validity and conclusions. Maintains strict confidentiality of information.
Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Health and Safety or related field and appropriate coursework
Requires 2 years' experience in occupational safety or related discipline, which includes design of independent projects, data analysis and interpretation
Master's degree in Safety (engineering/management), Risk Control, Industrial Hygiene
Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist
Occupational Health and Safety Management System experience (e.g., OSHA VPP, OHSAS 18001, ANSI Z10, ISO 45001)
Multi-site experience and/or providing subject matter expertise remotely
Enterprise/Corporate policy and procedure development
Industrial Hygiene exposure assessments and sampling
Experience using EHS information technology software
Healthcare safety experience preferred.
Must have ability to organize and implement procedures/techniques independently. Must have significant technical knowledge, understanding of safety regulations, ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in written materials, and ability to work both independently and in a team. Ability to be flexible and adaptable to a changing work environment that requires upgrading of skills on a regular basis is required. Must have established presentation and training skills, and be capable of demonstrating and exhibiting positive customer service skills. Must have working knowledge of PC and ability to use routine computer software packages (word processing, spreadsheets, and databases). Must have working knowledge of the internet and the ability to conduct searches for new products and safety information.
License or certification
Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification is required within two years of hire.
Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum salary every 2 weeks is approx $2519.20, based on a full-time position.
Normal business hours, Monday through Friday; Ability to be on-call as needed.
