The position is primarily research and teaching with the expectation of contributing to outreach and extension activities. The successful candidate is expected to establish a record of excellence in both scholarly and educational activities, as well as competitive and independent research and teaching programs.
The candidate will write proposals to secure extramural funds from state, regional and national grant sources, private foundations and companies. The program must be based on stakeholder needs and effectively integrate research with other disciplines such as electrical engineering, food, materials, computer and health sciences.
The candidate will disseminate research findings by publishing results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and delivering presentations at scientific conferences and stakeholder meetings, and using the web-based and other communication platforms.
Other responsibilities include advising graduate and undergraduate students, mentoring student activities/organizations, and serving the university, college, department and professional organizations.
WSU has an opening for a full-time tenure-track, assistant professor to join our food engineering team. The successful applicant will develop a nationally-recognized and regionally relevant program focused on developing sensor-based solutions to address food safety and quality in support of e-commerce for food delivery. E-commerce has changed the way many consumers purchase food and this has created a unique set of challenges for food manufacturers and distributors on how to deliver products to a person’s doorstep. Additionally, as consumer lifestyles and food preferences change, food manufacturers and distributors need to provide safe and nutritious high quality foods which meet regulatory requirements into the evolving delivery systems.
The food engineering team in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at Washington State University is recognized for developing novel food processing and packaging technologies for manufacturing safe, high quality, ready-to-eat meals with extended shelf-life. The food engineering program is supported by two food processing pilot plants and four laboratories. BSE Food Engineers have a long history of working with the US Army Natick Soldier Center, NASA and private food and polymer companies. We are looking for a well-qualified and experienced individual who wants to be part of this nationally and internationally recognized food engineering program.

1. Earned Ph.D. in Food Engineering, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, or closely related field by the time of hire/offer.
2. Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in food engineering; and sensor technology, food science, or related engineering field.

2. Demonstrated knowledge and research experience in sensing technology related to food safety and quality
3. Demonstrated experience in developing and/or delivering undergraduate and graduate courses.
