Phoenix New Times has an immediate opening for an experienced graphic designer to art direct its website and weekly print newspaper.
The art director will be expected to conceptualize and produce modern and sophisticated design for online presentations, print covers and special sections; oversee and assign photography, illustration and videography; produce page layouts for all print articles; and ensure the overall design quality of online visuals. This individual should have experience commissioning high-quality work from freelance talent, negotiating fees, clearing rights and managing a budget. The art director must be comfortable working in a team environment, collaborating with editors and writers as well as leaders in adjacent departments.
At least two to fours years of editorial design experience is required. The successful candidate will possess excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to juggle several projects at once. Applicants must have a superior understanding of typography and expert-level skills in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat.
This is a full-time union position, with competitive salary and benefits; the salary range is 55K to 65K, depending on experience. Interested and qualified applicants should submit cover letter, resume and design samples.
