This position will provide mostly weekend coverage plus a weekday and assistance with vaccines and medication administration. This position provides direct technical nursing care to patients in a boarding school ambulatory care setting. Initiates nursing actions and provides comprehensive nursing care to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, and socio-cultural needs to the patient and family. Preserves the patient’s dignity and respects cultural differences.
Must be able to triage situations in a timely manner. Must be organized and able to coordinate all aspects of patient care to provide the highest quality of health care services and to promote excellent customer service. Able to react in a calm manner and make sound nursing judgments in an emergency environment. Consults with the appropriate manager/supervisor in difficult situations requiring additional input.
Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job
Responsible for the active management of SEARHC patients enrolled at Mt. Edgecumbe High School (MEHS).
Responsible for administration and documentation of prescription and over-the-counter medications. Coordinates refills. Monitors compliance. Facilitates problem solving with patients, parents/guardians, providers and school staff when there are compliance issues.
Triages students who present with medical or behavioral health complaints.
Admits and oversees the care of students placed in the school’s sick bay.
Collaborates with the medical provider and all interdisciplinary team members to establish individualized medical goals that maximize patient healthcare outcomes. Assists individual patients with achieving these medical goals in the boarding school setting.
Manages panel acute and chronic care needs as well as health maintenance, by reviewing EHR reminders and triggers and providing outreach and education to patients.
Works with multi-disciplinary team as an advocate for the patient/client family at the service –delivery level, fostering patient/family decision making, independence, self-care and growth and development.
Uses problem-solving and anticipatory skills in meeting the needs of the patient and the provider. Patient needs should be addressed in a prompt, efficient manner.
Assists in the coordination of patient referrals within SEARHC and other outside facilities. Facilitates communication for patient travel between parents/guardians and MEHS staff. Serves as the primary link for other case managers and discharge coordinators in care coordination for the patients. Ensures referral records have been received and are available for provider’s review. Proactively identifies delays and obstacles to care and works to remedy individual cases and to improve the process.
Performs staff nursing duties in the various nursing roles in the clinic. Duties include assessment, documentation, education and administering appropriate medications and/or therapies.
Maintains annual competencies including safety and infection control requirements. Performs duties as assigned in a responsible, respectful, and caring manner to promote effective nursing staff relationships. Maintains a clean and safe working environment including adequate supplies and upkeep of unit and equipment, reporting any defective or missing equipment and safety hazards. Adheres to infection control policy and procedures.
Works collaboratively by building bridges and creating rapport with team members within departments, across the organization, and at MEHS.
Participates in department/clinic team and improvement efforts.
Provide both basic and technical nursing care (under direct supervision) to acutely ill patients, utilizing the nursing process. Able to team lead. Independently performs data collection, teaching and interventions as directed by the advanced practice provider. Orders studies on and retrieves results from the electronic health record.
Prepares and administers prescribed medication (oral, topical and intramuscular) and other therapeutic treatments prescribed for the patient by a medical provider within the scope of practice and department protocol. Provides case management support to APP.
Initiates and maintains clinical records (with a shared responsibility in the development of nursing care plans) by recording one or more of the following: vital signs; height and weight; observations relative to patient’s condition and reaction; medications; treatments and nursing care given.
Maintains a clean and safe work environment including adequate supplies, upkeep of clinic and equipment, reporting any defective or missing equipment and safety hazards; adheres to infection control policies and procedures. Performs basic and advanced RN level unit support activities (e.g. ordering, scheduling, Quality Improvement and other projects as assigned).
Perform duties as assigned in a responsible, respectful, caring manner to promote the most effective nursing staff relationships.
Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required
Current full, unrestricted Registered Nursing license in Alaska or other U.S. state required. Direct Hire must have applied for an Alaska nursing license before start date. Agency staff must have an active Alaska license.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience Required
Knowledge of
Knowledge in a variety of standard assignments requiring licensure as a RN and work experience to resolve recurring problems in delivering nursing care utilizing the nursing process.
Knowledge sufficient to use equipment, material, education, medication and supplies in diagnostic and treatment procedures.
Knowledge of nursing care principles, practices, diagnosis and processes (including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation) to provide professional nursing care to patients.
Skills in
Proficient in nursing procedures and basic nursing care.
Oral and written communication skills, can enter and retrieve patient data accurately, can verbally communicate findings to healthcare team.
Proficient in operating and monitoring a variety of specialized medical equipment used in clinic setting.
Ability to
Ability to implement appropriate nursing interventions based upon the knowledge of a wide variety of nursing diagnosis, medical and psychosocial disorders, normal course of disease and anticipated complications.
