Research Intern - Economics

The intern will work on developing the econometric properties (and associated code) of a high-dimensional synthetic control estimator that uses L-1 penalization to pick matching variables (predictors). This code will be applied to the estimation of Azure app-service elasticities using some region level experimentation in prices. The end goal is a quality economics publication which will include the intern as a a co-author. The intern will sit with the Chief Economist’s Office research group and meet regularly with myself and Brian Quistorff.

Researchers in the Chief Economist’s Office work on advancing the state of the art in microeconomics and applying those advances to business problems at Microsoft.

Responsibilities
Interns are expected to work closely with their mentors, to be available for regular syncs and to make good faith efforts to pursue the agreed upon project

Qualifications
Required Qualifications

Must be currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science or a related STEM field.
Must have at least 1 year of experience with deep learning for visual object classification.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to develop original research agendas.
Must be able to collaborate effectively with other researchers and product development teams.
Excellent interpersonal skills, cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.
Ability to think unconventionally to derive creative and innovative solutions.
