Protocol Labs is seeking a Documentation Lead in our Lab-wide Operations Group (which we call “LabOS”). This team member will focus on making Labbers highly productive through amazing documentation, tutorials, and tools.

This role entails not just writing documentation, but also formulating a plan for (1) what should we document, (2) assessing who is our target reader and what are his/her needs?, (3) determining what is the best presentation format for particular content - e.g., written article, video, process diagram, etc. (4) how do we keep documentation up to date and constantly improving.

Protocol Labs is driving breakthroughs in computing and internet technology to push humanity forward. Currently we maintain 5 open source projects focused on foundational internet infrastructure, and we expect to add more. We have a remote and distributed workforce in a growing list of locations (now 15 countries) to allow us to work with the brightest minds in the world. Our belief is that improving processes, protocols and documentation can massively accelerate Protocol Labs and our mission.

We have many operational and documentation needs. We’ve started building a lab-wide handbook, and it needs an owner to create, maintain, update, edit, and curate the content. We also have other operational needs across a wide spectrum that includes doing research on operational best practices, helping with project management, and helping run our planning processes.

As an individual you love process and protocols, and also love communicating them through clear and concise writing. You thrive while collaborating with others, and are happy to take on a wide variety of deliverables. You have an operational mindset - you can quickly understand problems and optimize processes to fix them. You write really well, and have an empathetic knack for putting yourself in the shoes of those consuming what you are writing.
As Platform Operations at Protocol Labs you will…
Become an expert on processes in remote and distributed organizations, and help document them.
Coordinate and oversee the editorial and quality assurance process for new content with the respective content owners.
Work with content owners to curate existing content by managing an audit cadence to circumvent content bloat.
Ensure all content is fresh, fully developed, and expertly edited which includes finding, diagnosing, and fixing content problems - including broken links, typographical errors, and formatting inconsistencies.
Draft and deliver new content when cross-org requests/needs arise.
Use quantitative and qualitative data to optimize the handbook user experience for Labbers (our word for all the great folks who work at Protocol Labs).
Perform handbook administration such as setting provisions and managing access and workflows.
Collaborate across our organization to find best practices and elucidate, diagnose and solve operational challenges.
Help manage certain processes such as our quarterly and annual planning process that guides Protocol Labs toward our ambitious goals in improving internet technology

Ability to work independently with multiple stakeholders across the organization to prioritize work and push improvements to the handbook consistently
An eye for optimizing user experience through design and data
Experience managing online documentation or training materials for internal and/or external audiences
Bonus points...
Experience with fully remote and distributed organizations
Familiarity with Github, Google Analytics, Google Sheets, and/or Gitbook
Passion for open source
