The Art Institute of Chicago, founded in 1879, is a world-renowned art museum housing one of the largest permanent collections in the United States. An encyclopedic museum, the Art Institute collects, preserves, and interprets works in every medium from all cultures and historical periods. With a collection of approximately 300,000 art works and artifacts, the museum has particularly strong holdings in Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting, contemporary art, early 20th century European painting and sculpture, Japanese prints, and photography. BASIC FUNCTIONS: Serves as first museum contact for the visiting public and members. Serves to create a positive museum experience for those visiting by providing assistance in the following roles both in admissions and the information desk: selling and processing admission to the museum, actively promoting membership sales and benefits, conducting add-on transactions to include, but not limited to, requesting donations for the museum, audio tour sales, sales of Pocket Guides and other offers and programs. Capture visitor demographics data, provide visitor information and assist with enhancing total visitor experience.
Assists the general public and members in a consistently courteous, friendly and professional manner while generating revenues for the museum.
Sells general admission with add-ons for membership, donations, audio tours, Pocket Guides and other marketing opportunities.
Operates computerized ticketing and database admissions systems. Responsible for strict adherence to charging appropriate admission prices, verifying valid IDs for free and discounted types of admission, and collecting all complimentary passes and coupons. Responsible and accountable for properly handling funds collected at admissions desk and information desk.
Actively promotes, sells and processes memberships. Sells and processes membership renewals. Works with Development database system and ticketing system to provide members with account information.
Provides information to visitors regarding museum policies, exhibits, collections, special events and programs. Operates the collection database system to provide more in-depth information on museum collection. Provides directional information. Directs visitor to appropriate personnel when further assistance is needed.
Provides assistance, as needed, for special events and programs outside normal operating hours.
Assists with preparation of museum opening by conducting daily walk-through of galleries and other public spaces, filling brochures as needed, checking signage, etc.
Gathers visitor information and visitor comments.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Proven ability to easily engage people and orient them to the museum’s many offerings.
Ability to generate revenue through effective selling techniques and offers add-ons.
Ability to apply critical thinking and sound judgment to solve problems independently.
Able to correctly execute cash handling responsibilities.
Able to correctly access various database systems within museums.
Serve as an ambassador to museum and market museum in a positive manner.
Able to work well with others in a team environment.
Able to work flexible schedule, which includes weekends, holidays, before and after hours.
