This UX Writer position requires someone with strong experience in Product and Marketing with exceptional writing skills. This person is well versed in the product development cycle, has a solid user centered and product design process, and has a diverse and extensive portfolio of work from large scale products to incubation products. This person is creative in their problem-solving solutions, can articulate a strong content point-of-view, and can inspire a team multi-disciplinary people. Most importantly this person will be a driver of change, open to new possibilities, impact oriented, and a great culture fit.
About the job
As a User Experience Writer, you are an advocate for Microsoft user experience, working to shape product experiences by creating useful, meaningful text and other supporting communications that help users complete the task at hand. You help set the vision for content and drive cohesive product narratives across multiple platforms and touch points. As a stellar writer, you have a portfolio of work that demonstrates content that is natural and conversational and brings the heart, soul, and right tone at the right time to the overall user experience. You communicate directly with the people using our products.
You work with people in a variety of UX design-related jobs including researchers, product managers, engineers, marketing, and business stakeholders. Collaborating with each, you strive to establish conversational, cohesive language and a unified voice across products and platforms. You regularly use empathy, logic and hard data to inform content choices, and are an expert in your product. You provide content recommendations that include the right words with complementary data and images.
You use your gift for language to design intuitive, delightful product experiences that help users accomplish their goals. You’re also strategic and understand content strategy defining product vision and narratives across multiple platforms and touch points. As a writer, you have a portfolio of work that demonstrates your gift for simplifying and improving user experiences.
You will drive guidelines and best practices, manage complex, cross-functional projects, and work with leadership to set goals and implement roadmaps. You provide direction and mentorship to help scale your efforts and support to peers.
User experience is at the forefront of how we create empathetic communications, and intuitive, innovative, and beautiful products that people love. We strive to learn and understand our users’ needs, behaviors, and emotions to gather insights that inform product strategy and design. Our UX teams include designers, researchers, and accessibility professionals who are passionate about accessibility, quality, usability, and simplicity. Use writing and editing skills to write conversational UI text that facilitates user navigation, as well onboarding, promos, error messages, instructional materials, and marketing materials and other components of the end-to-end user experience.
Drive vision for product language and content across a product or subject-matter domain, and ensure cohesive product narratives; Document your strategies with guidelines, and establish best practices and strategy principles.
Manage projects from needs assessment to implementation; identify opportunities, establish priorities, secure resources, and manage stakeholders.
Collaborate with designers, researchers, legal, marketing, product managers, and engineers; Influence and adapt to stakeholders and their feedback.
Provide leadership, direction, and mentorship to educate cross-functional partners on the role of UX writing, brand voice and tone, and content strategy throughout the product development process.
Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing, Screenwriting, English, Communications, Journalism, Technical Writing, UX, HCI, or equivalent practical experience.
4 years of experience on user-focused product writing including work in hardware, software, digital agency, or other relevant product area.
Experience in shaping content for multi-disciplinary projects.
A portfolio of UX-focused writing samples.
Experience developing information architecture for complex product suites. Experience with localization and accessibility best practices.
Knowledge of online technology and related products, including web and mobile UI and tools.
Familiarity with user experience research principles and practices and how to use data to provide informed user insights.
Ability to lead, collaborate and influence (without formal authority) engineering, design and product management teams.
Experience writing on brand and helping define a brand voice and/or in writing for interactive technology in a character or brand voice.
Conversational A.I., scriptwriting, and character writing is a huge plus.
A portfolio demonstrating breadth and creativity and proven experience in content writing, telling stories and UX writing. Please indicate your specific roles and contributions for each project submitted as part of the portfolio.
