As the Director of Operations for Harrington Discovery Institute:

Oversee all aspects of day-to-day operations such as, business, finance, IT and physical facility at HDI. This person is focused on ensuring programs are delivered on time and on budget, with the overall goal of creating great outcomes for HDI. The Director, HDI Operations will also support and enable (but not primarily be responsible for) activities relating to fundraising & development, overall strategy, business development, program management, partnerships and partner relations; therefore, this person will occasionally be asked to participate in these activities.

HDI aims to operate as a High Performance Organization (HPO) so that it can ultimately be a high impact organization; it seeks a Director, HDI Operations with experience leading and growing other organizations that were demonstrably high performance organizations. Among non-profit organizations globally, HDI is an innovator, establishing an exciting, new non-profit pharma business model and creating novel ways of achieving success in the pharmaceutical and drug development industries; HDI seeks a Director, HDI Operations comfortable with innovation and non-profit organizations. HDI exists within the context of the larger Harrington Project and is part of University Hospitals Health Systems; HDI seeks a Director, HDI Operations who appreciates and can achieve success given the opportunities and challenges of “intrapreneurship.”

This person will plan, negotiate as necessary, develop, successfully coordinate and implement internal and external operations individually, among HDI leadership and assigned teams, to support HDI physician/center leader, national/international program, non-profit partner arrangements and mission aligned for-profit company activities to achieve excellence and identified metrics in HDI’s three focus areas: physician scientist, rare disease, and neurodegenerative disease programs

Along with HDI’s President, the Director, HDI Operations will also co-report to governance bodies such as the HDI Oversight Committee and UH boards. In areas of science, the Director, HDI Operations may rely on HDI’s President and Chief Scientific Officer, as well as the VP of Therapeutics Development.


BS or BA required minimum; MBA preferred

Experience & Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of finance (budgeting, allocations, financial models) and business plans
  • Experience at early stage, high growth organization
  • Experience growing an organization within an organization (“intrapreneurship”)
  • Director level experience
  • Experience at non-profit organization, especially a grant-making organization
  • Experienced in Healthcare or Pharma
  • Experienced in Venture and/or Biotechnology
  • Experience using some form of philosophy or strategy for operational excellence (e.g., Lean Methodology, Lean Start-up, Agile Development, Toyota Production System, High Performance Organization, etc.)
