Director of Utilization Management

We are seeking a Director of Utilization Management for SUN Behavioral Delaware - a free-standing 90-bed inpatient behavioral health hospital expected to open in Autumn 2018. This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and is an integral part of the hospital leadership team. SUN Behavioral will offer inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors; including mental health, substance use disorder and specialty programs.

This position is responsible for directing a system of performance improvement, outcomes measurement, case management, and utilization management which is efficient and produces reimbursement for patients admitted to all programs. Ensures quality patient/client care that follows regulatory requirements, professional standards, and the facility’s policies and procedures. Certifies that documentation is accurate and complete and reflects a true picture of a patient’s progress in treatment. Provides review with third-party payors as scheduled. Participates in CQI performance improvement activities and educates all staff members.


Regulatory Requirements:

  • LPN or RN, Social Work, Mental Health/Behavioral Sciences, or related field required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of direct clinical experience in a psychiatric or mental health treatment setting, including one (1) year of managing a related function preferred.
  • At least one (1) year experience with discharge planning and concurrent review REQUIRED
  • Experience in patient assessment, family motivation, treatment planning, and communication with external review organizations or comparable entities.
  • LVN, RN, LMSW, LPC or applicable license preferred.
  • Current CPR and CPI certifications (Provided in orientation).

Language Skills:

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.


  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office, strong in Excel; data analysis.
  • Must be able to manage multiple details and to demonstrate superior organizational skills.
