Position Title: Teacher Assistant

Hourly Wage:

Work Week: Monday-Friday

Annual Days Worked: 205

Work Hours: 7 hrs per day

Assist the teacher with the basic functions of running a Head Start classroom.


  • Assumes teacher responsibilities and duties in teacher’s absence.
  • Assists Head Start teacher with planning and carrying out of classroom activities.
  • Jointly coordinates the activities of support staff and service providers.
  • Jointly plans, organizes classroom duties and attends parent meetings as scheduled or required.
  • Helps develop an environment and daily curriculum that reflects a developmentally appropriate anti-bias, multi-cultural approach.
  • Helps implement fun and inviting meal times that focus on family style meal service.
  • Jointly oversees maintenance and upkeep of classroom supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Develops and maintains a relationship with each family to encourage meaningful participation in the program.
  • Submits monthly reports, lesson plans, and referrals as required.
  • Helps develop and implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum for children, based on individual interest, needs and abilities.
  • Familiarize and follow all Head Start Performance Standards, State of Arizona licensing requirements, CACFP requirements and other licensing and monitoring procedures/policies.
  • Jointly implement federal, state, local health, CACFP, and safety policies and procedures.
  • Attends all scheduled staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Other responsibilities/duties assigned by Teacher and/or Director.


Skill and knowledge required: High School Diploma or GED. Childhood Development Associate credential (CDA) or experience working with children and willing to enroll in CDA program. Self-motivating and motivated to pursue additional training in job related areas. Have reliable, insured vehicle available for use on the job and be able to document a good driving record. Be able to interpret local, state, and federal regulations, policies, and procedures as they pertain to the duties of the job. Bilingual is helpful.

Accuracy and Efficiency: Job requires a degree of accuracy and timelines

Peer and client contact: Frequent contact with co-workers, children, parents and support agencies.

Other requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age. Be in good physical and emotional health. Must be able to pass required Department of Public Safety fingerprinting clearance and have all required I-9 Employee Eligibility Verification information. Ability to obtain CPR, First Aid and Food Handlers certifications. Must have annual TB skin test, Tetanus within last 10 years, and current MMR immunization. Complete any additional documentation required for Program Licensing. Present 2 personal and 2 professional references at time of interview.
