The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible through nursing processes for providing and coordinating nursing care and resource management for patients as well as families and communities; with the goal of attaining, maintaining and resorting optimum health. He/she utilizes judgment and is guided by knowledge of basic principles of nursing based on the biological, physical and psycho-social sciences

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following but are not limited to:
Applies a systematic problem-solving approach in developing, implementing and evaluating nursing plans of care
Compiles a total nursing assessment within the initial shift or specified time frame. Assessment includes the following factors: biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational needs and discharge planning
Develops a nursing plan of care based on identified nursing diagnosis, patient care needs and standards and consistent with the therapies of other disciplines
Involves the patient and/or significant other in decision making regarding nursing care, in setting goals and in preparing and implementing teaching and/or discharge plans
Documents implementation of the plan of care
Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care and outcomes at least daily, making revisions as appropriate
Demonstrates competency in basic nursing practice required to manage and provide total patient care through the application of CCOC’s philosophy, policies and procedures
Provides safe administration of medication
Provides for safe administration of intravenous therapy
Demonstrates knowledge and skill in providing treatment
Interprets clinical data/patient responses and collaborates with members of the health care team to provide comprehensive and coordinated patient care
Utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to monitor timely achievement of identified patient outcomes within anticipated lengths of stay
Communicates pertinent information throughout all phases of the nursing process
Introduces self as a Registered Nurse, defines the role to the patient/significant other and orients them to the nursing unit
Demonstrates consideration in communicating with patients/significant others and expresses genuine interest in patients’ welfare
Documents relevant observations of patients’ progress, psychosocial status, response to therapy and completion of physical/nursing orders
Teaches patients/significant others at their level of understanding and readiness; documents response to teaching and need for follow-up instructions
Communicates effectively with physicians and other disciplines to exchange patient information
Provides prompt, accurate shift report, shares all pertinent patient care information throughout assigned shift
Maintains accountability while delegating nursing care responsibilities according to patient care needs and staff competencies
Demonstrates effective management skills and contributes to the efficient operation of the unit
Promotes effective management skills and contributes to the efficient operation of the unit
Assumes leadership role as necessary
Provides staff orientation, training, instruction, guidance, and supervision as necessary
Acts as a role model by maintaining positive behaviors when interacting with patients, visitors and other members of health care team
Transcribes orders and performs other clerical duties as necessary
Prioritizes work and makes changes as situations warrant
Participates in ongoing evaluation to ensure quality nursing care
Ensures Hourly Patient Rounding is incorporated in to the daily Patient Care routine
Works well with patients, physician(s) and other CCOC employees
Successfully meets Unit Specific Skill Sets
Complies with all Standards of Behavior set forth by CCOC
Adheres to policies and procedures set forth in CCOC Employee Manual
Adheres to the CCOC attendance policy
Follows HIPAA, OSHA and Compliance Plan regulations
Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Current license to practice as registered nurse in the State of Ohio

BLS required within 3 months of hire

ACLS required within 1 year of hire

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Must be able to effectively communicate with physicians, employees, patients and families

SKILLS

Ability to plan and organize

Works well under pressure of environment

Demonstrate/knowledge and responsibility through reference from education and/or job experience

Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients/customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity

Assumes accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with customer service policy

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.

Requires exposure to communicable disease, blood, body fluids, sharps, toxic substances, ionizing radiation and other potentially hazardous conditions common to a clinical environment

Must have the ability to walk and stand for long periods of time, reach, twist, bend, see, hear and speak

Finger dexterity and the ability to grasp is required
