Academic Breast Surgeon
UMass Memorial Medical Center
The Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery at UMass Memorial Medical Center, the clinical partner of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, seeks applications from qualified individuals for a position of a Breast Surgeon at our Breast Cancer Center to start in August 2021. UMMMC is the only tertiary care facility in central Massachusetts and covers over one million lives. The system is comprised of 800 acute care beds in Worcester, three owned hospitals, and eight affiliated hospitals throughout central Massachusetts.
The successful applicant will have both academic and clinical interests as well as possess the interpersonal skills to represent the institution in the community. While the position is for a fellowship trained Breast surgeon, an applicant’s interest and ability to develop a practice in other soft tissue surgical oncology too is also welcome. Academic appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level. The Division welcomes applications as well as recommendations for this position.
The Breast Center is an established multi-disciplinary program located in a beautifully appointed space in the Cancer Center and includes all medical and nursing specialties involved in the modern care of breast patients. We see more than 500 new Breast cancers/year across the system, have a collegial working atmosphere, three practicing breast surgeons, a full-time nurse practitioner, a high-risk program, and good working relationships with the division of Breast Cancer Research in the Department of Molecular, Cell and Cancer Biology, as well as the surgical outcomes research group within the Department of Surgery and in the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences. We also have a developing outreach program with our affiliated institutions, medical students rotating with us routinely and a designated surgical oncology rotation in the General Surgery residency program (6 chief residents/year) at both junior and senior levels. The Department of Surgery includes 60 full time faculty in 9 different divisions including Plastic Surgery which also has a residency program.
Centrally located Worcester is just miles from Boston, Providence, and the beaches on Cape Cod and Rhode Island, with a short ride to the scenic Berkshire and Wachusett Mountains. The diverse city of Worcester has nine colleges and universities including the University of Massachusetts Medical School, which has beautiful panoramic views of Lake Quinsigamond. As the second largest city in New England, it has powered a rise of booming technology, research, manufacturing and healthcare industries. The Worcester area has good schools, affordable housing and plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities. The city itself also has a thriving restaurant scene and is home to the Hanover Theatre for Performing Arts, Worcester Art Museum, the Woo Sox (Minor League Red Sox Team) and the family friendly Ecotarium.
