Job Description

The District Product Manager will maintain and continuously improve Summit’s inventory and purchasing practices with a focus on commodities, (wire, cable and conduit). This position will execute inventory control measures to ensure the company maintains exceptional customer service while maximizing working capital and improving profitability.

Role Summary:
Maintain adequate stock levels of wire/cable/conduit/PVC to meet established service levels and working capital goals
Negotiate pricing for high volatility commodity items.
Maintain relationships with factory and agent community in the district that affects the commodity pricing levels.
Interface with the sales organization and district sales management on a regular basis in order to understand current and future quantity quotation requirements.
Solicit pricing on behalf of the sales force for large purchase commodity jobs where the commodity pricing exceeds a specified amount.
Once made, maintain and manage commodity blankets
Interact with other district product managers regularly in order to compare needs and seek opportunities to leverage buys across the footprint.
Work with sales team to ‘pre-sell’ large buys.
Analyze and recommend market buys to supply chain management.
Conduct product line RFP’s as part of vendor rationalization.
Escalation for district vendor issues.
Monitor, report, correct, and manage vendor performance and relationships.
Develop the company’s inventory management strategy with the aim of controlling costs, generating overall savings, rationalizing inventory and maximizing working capital.
Understand and support LEAN programs, ISO standards and Summit procedures for document control, purchasing, process control, etc.
Utilize purchasing systems/programs to maximize customer service levels and financial performance
Provide leadership to improve profitability by reducing product costs, supporting preferred supplier programs and implementing purchasing strategy
Determine the advisability of large inventory additions to specific service centers or across the company. Verify the need for such additions, deny requests when determined unnecessary, and work with branch personnel to determine alternative strategies to meet the needs of customers.
Develop and implement innovative methods to dispose of dead or obsolete inventory including the transfer of inventory between service centers where conditions are more favorable for sale. Enforce write-off policies of dead or obsolete stock when necessary.
Ensure non-stock items are purchased from approved vendor list whenever possible.
Consult with branch management on decisions regarding the movement of items from a non-stock to stock classification.
Build inventory turn plan, direct item lifecycle process, and participate in the line review process.
Review branch requests for new products and lines to stock based on analysis of market conditions.
Develops broad influence across the district through the promotion of win-win outcomes within, among and across the management of Summit’s service centers.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications and Experience:
Broad-based experience in the electrical industry including inventory, sales, and operations.
Thorough understanding of inventory management systems.
Understanding of the needs of manufacturers, customers, branch locations, and the end-user relating to inventory management.
Ability to evaluate trends in inventory levels along with financial and business indicators and translate into actionable information to drive results.
Selling style not a telling style of communication
Solid knowledge of Summit’s product lines, and suppliers.
Ability to make decisions, often difficult and/or unpopular, that support the organizational strategy and the ability to influence others to support those decisions.
Strong business skills and experience.
Exceptional communication and time management skills.
Must be able to work independently while partnering with internal customers to deliver exceptional service to all other Summit departments and external customers.
Must be able to develop and deliver business plans to branch management and executive leadership.
Team player, creative thinker with good follow-up skills and attention to detail.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite.

Must possess a “whatever it takes” approach to work at Summit.

Beneficial Skills and Experience:
Previous successful experience in SAP is strongly preferred.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
Knowledge of GAINS Systems is preferred.
BS degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or similar field.
Completed Bronze, Silver, and Gold level of EPEC series and other industry training.
