Intern - Junior Developer / DBA - (18003472)

The Windstream IT Internship Program exposes participants to the exciting world of telecom and a designated workgroup within our IT organization. The program equips participants with real life skills as well as the potential for landing a full-time position after graduation. The paid internship will last 10 - 12 weeks from mid-May until August. Interns are paired with a team mentor and company-wide mentor to assist with coaching, training and development. Interns will also have the opportunity to network with intern peers and company employees during monthly team-builder activities. Intern must be located during the summer in Little Rock, Arkansas. Windstream does not cover the cost of housing.

In general, we have two types of IT internship opportunities: Junior Developer or Junior System Network/Database Administrator (DBA). Please note specific day to day duties vary on team and student skillset. In general we look for a passion for programming and database interest.

Junior Developer
Assist with product design, documentation and release testing. Develop, test, and implement code in agile development environments. Opportunities in User Interface design, workflow automation development, IT network monitoring development and more! Assist senior team members with issue/bug investigation and resolution. Design and optimize SQL database queries. Complete intern project and present to leadership at the Summer.

Junior System Network/Database Administrator
Assist with troubleshooting and ongoing maintenance of databases. Learn to use database tools to upgrade, maintain database performance and move data from multiple databases. Ensure database data is accessible and available for customer use. Use Sql language to query databases for information. Collaborate with multiple groups including the Networking group to enable data delivery alone with security protocols to protect our customer information.

Specific Team Positions

The Network Analytics and Big Data team - Intern will assist with building applications that leverage Big Data (Hadoop/Hortonworks) working with dashboard creation and machine learning. This team is responsible for collecting, storing, processing, and analyzing huge sets of data. The primary focus of the team is on choosing optimal solutions to use for these purposes, then maintaining, implementing, and monitoring them. As an intern on the Big Data team, you will have an opportunity to gain Big Data experience using Hadoop/HortonWorks and machine learning to solve large-scale problems. An understanding of distributed systems and experience in using open source framework to build applications will also be an opportunity. Some technologies we are using include Github, GitLab, Hadoop, HortonWorks HDP/HDF, Hive, HBase, NiFi, and Spark.

Ideal intern would have some of the below skills and knowledge base:

Scripting languages such as Shell/PERL
Machine Learning
Open Source tools (Telegraph, InfluxDB, Grafana, etc.)

Application Automation Team – Intern will assist with building applications or solutions to automate manual business tasks and processes. Intern will interface with telecom professional teams to analyze, develop and test Robotic Programming Automation (RPA) solutions using multiple automation platforms and technologies.

Ideal intern would have some of the below skills and knowledge base:

IT curriculum and Business classes, i.e. MIS preferred over Computer Science, with an emphasis on programming. But open to any.
RPA programming (Blue Prism, Automation Anywhere, UIPath, AutoHotKey, etc)
Web-Based programming/design
Web Services -XML RESTful and SOAP
Scripting languages such as Shell/PERL

  • If you don't have these system or programming skills now, selected interns will receive exposure and experience with many by the end of the summer! These are just some of the technical skills a successful intern will have not a requirement.

Minimum Hiring Requirements

High School diploma or GED

Currently enrolled in college as a Junior studying Computer Science, Mathematics, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Telecommunications or other related IT major.

3.0 + GPA requirement
