Position Information

Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) currently has a vacancy for Park Ranger. DPR oversees the County's natural resources and provides a variety of affordable recreational programs and services. Park Rangers patrol designated Arlington County Parks; provide visitor information and programming services; support other County programs (maintenance, sports, recreation); and coordinate with Arlington County Police Department, Fire Department, and other appropriate agencies to help ensure park security and visitor safety.

Location: The employee will be assigned to the Ranger Station at Bluemont Park, 601 N. Manchester Street, but will primarily be traveling throughout Arlington County to monitor all parks and trails.

Responsibilities include:
Provide information to park users regarding park rules, hours, facilities, and activities being offered;
Respond to customer inquiries about park usage or the Park Ranger Program Services via phone and/or email;
Update and develop programs and activities about park safety, park history, environmental issues, and natural park features using MS Suite;
Promote safety and environmental awareness through direct visitor interactions, dissemination of written materials, and presentations;
Create incident reports to document issues and concerns reported by park users;
Prepare statistical reports including park usage, Park Ranger duties and waste collecting for use with quarterly and end of year reports using MS Excel; and
Assist the Park Ranger II with administration of the Park Ranger Program.

This position requires walking, biking and/or driving a vehicle for long periods of time; assisting in emergency medical care by administering first-aid; performing occasional some manual labor such as moving heavy tree limbs from bike trails; and working outdoors in all types of weather.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:
A high school diploma or equivalent; and
One year full-time experience as a Park Ranger or performing similar work such as: camp counselor, naturalist, recreational worker, or general park employee.

Substitution: An post-high school degree in one of the following fields may substitutefor the experience requirement: Parks and Recreation, Environmental Education, Natural Resource Management, Biology, Wildlife Sciences, or closely related science field.

Desirable:
Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
Park ranger in an urban setting;
Designing and conducting informational presentations to the public; and/or
Using MS Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint).

Special Requirements

The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record;

The applicant must be certified in both CPR and Standard First Aid or achieve such certification within 3 months from the date of appointment.

Work hours: This position requires a 40 hour work week using a rotating schedule of days, evenings, and weekends, based on program needs. Employee will work some holidays and during severe weather events.

Hours of report will be:
11:00 a.m.-9:30 p.m., October 15th thru March 15th
12:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m., March 16th thru October 14th.

Location: The employee will be assigned to the Ranger Station at Bluemont Park, 601 N. Manchester Street, but will primarily be traveling throughout Arlington County to monitor all parks and trails.
