The Social Media Specialist, under supervision of the Communications Manager, advances the Detroit Zoological Society's mission and vision by supporting the management of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube). The Social Media Specialist will assist with the creation of high-quality, consistent and engaging social media content that aligns with the organization's mission; conducting regular platform analyses; monitoring feeds and comments of all platforms; developing responses to inquiries; analyzing data and metrics to gain insight on effective strategies, results and demographics; formulating strategies that optimize each platform to increase content visibility; and identifying new opportunities for engagement including emerging platforms and participation in viral campaigns. This individual will report to the Communications Manager, effectively executing and managing all requests that align with the organization's mission and goals of the department.
The Social Media Specialist will support, both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society. This individual will support and enhance a clean, safe, enjoyable, and educational experience at the Detroit Zoological Society by actively engaging in the enforcement of Customer Service Standards, and specifically by knowing and understanding the Detroit Zoological Society's "SCOPE" of service, animal care, community relations and facility appearance guidelines; by enforcing safety and security policies, and following all other policies set by the organization. The Social Media Specialist will maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituents and always preserve a high level of integrity, professionalism and confidentiality.

Authority and Accountability
The Social Media Specialist has the authority to carry out the job requirements and responsibilities. This individual is accountable to the Communications Manager.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Makes recommendations for high-quality, engaging social media content that aligns with the Detroit Zoological Society's mission and vision
Monitors social media platforms, feeds, posts and comments, and proposes responses to inquiries where appropriate
Provides input for strategies that optimize and increase the DZS's visibility online
Conducts regular platform analyses to monitor changing trends and algorithms
Identifies new opportunities for engagement, including emerging platforms and participation in viral campaigns
Work is performed indoors in a typical office or remote environment. Flexibility and availability to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends as needed to perform job requirements. May be outdoors, with exposure to all seasonal weather conditions. Frequent exposure to the public through online communication.
Able to perform essential functions which typically involve seeing well enough to read standard text, often on video display monitors; speaking, lecturing and giving clear instructions; standing or walking to guide small and large groups. Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Bachelor's degree in public relations, marketing, communications or related field
2+ years' professional experience in social media and digital marketing
Exceptional writing and editing skills (including a strong understanding of AP Style)
Photography, videography and photo/video editing skills
High proficiency in social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, as well as content management systems and social analytics tools
Experience in the development, execution and analysis of social media campaigns
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively on a fast-paced team
Strong time-management and organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
