Portfolio Overview
The strategy portfolio in Pew’s program unit informs critical institutional and program decision-making, strengthens the design and implementation of Pew’s work, and generates knowledge that advances Pew’s program objectives. In the portfolio, the evaluation and research area consists of two teams: the evaluation team designs and manages evaluations that focus on yielding objective, timely, and essential information that can be used to improve program effectiveness, inform institutional decisions, and promote accountability for results. The second team, library and archives research (LAR), provides research support and assistance across all Pew programs and projects, as well as to operations units including communications, legal affairs, and the executive office. LAR works with vendors to deliver high-quality research tools for use by Pew staff worldwide and provides direct research assistance, including data collection, literature reviews, and knowledge of and access to materials related to Pew history, as required.

Position Overview
The senior associate, research archivist, is located in Pew’s Washington, DC, office and is a member of the LAR unit housed within program’s strategy portfolio. The position reports to the project director and is responsible for day-to-day management of Pew’s digital archiving program and its application to information in various systems. The senior associate provides research support for Pew staff with a special emphasis on Pew’s history, including the founders, and past philanthropic work, and works closely with the project director creating knowledge resources using Pew’s archives.


Identifies and preserves digital records.
Applies cataloging and tagging to digital records and manages Pew’s taxonomy.
Makes digital archival material available to Pew staff.
Assists the project director with developing the unit’s ongoing digital resource strategy.
Works closely with staff to identify information needs.
Promotes knowledge sharing throughout the organization.
Curates information for use by Pew staff on Pew’s intranet.
Assists the project director with Pew historical research.
Serves as liaison with outside vendors and the staff of the Hagley Museum and Library.


A bachelor’s degree is required; master’s degree in library science or equivalent is preferred.
Must have at least four years of experience in an information related position, such as a library or archive, with an emphasis on cataloging and/or taxonomy application.
Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
Needs the ability to classify complex information.
Ability to work independently and with other professionals in a collaborative, project-focused environment.
Skilled at setting priorities, organizing time, and identifying resources for projects.
Good interpersonal skills and customer service orientation.

Minimal travel for conferences and meetings is anticipated for this position.
