The Department of General Services, Division of Consolidated Laboratories ( DCLS ) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a Senior Scientist in the Microbial Reference Group. The Microbial Reference Group performs testing in the areas of Mycobacteria, Mycology, Pertussis, Reference Bacteriology, Enteric Bacteriology, and Bacterial Bioterrorism Response. This position will provide technical supervisor oversight and perform high complexity testing in the Mycobacteria laboratory. As a team leader, this position will coordinate daily workflow, review analytical results, update/review SOP’s, monitor all QA procedures and perform routine analysis of specimens. In addition, this position will perform method reviews, assist in method validation and implementation, and maintain safety training and competency assessment programs for the section. These duties are performed independently with minimal supervision from the group manager.
Some weekend, holiday, and on call work may be required.
The candidate must have a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology, medical technology, or a closely related field with comprehensive laboratory experience in Microbiology including the subspecialty of Mycobacteriology REQUIRED , and comply with CLIA requirements for technical supervisor.
Qualified candidates must demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience with the isolation and identification of Mycobacteria spp. using conventional methods including extensive knowledge identifying and performing drug susceptibility testing on M. tuberculosis. Qualified candidates must be able to perform highly complex testing in a BSL3 laboratory. Candidates must demonstrate a detailed understanding of QA/QC, and safety concepts and procedures as they apply to a CLIA certified BSL3 laboratory. Candidates must have working knowledge of lab operations; experience needed in operating and troubleshooting complex laboratory equipment; have strong verbal and written communications skills as well as demonstrated experience with information management systems (word processing, spreadsheet, and laboratory management systems) are necessary.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to coordinate, lead, and prioritize work of others; to train personnel; and to work effectively in a team environment. Must have ability to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally.
Master’s degree in microbiology or medical technology is preferred.
Experience working in a BSL3 laboratory preferred.
ASCP MT/ CLS registration preferred.
Experience with molecular identification methods is preferred.
