This position will work in collaboration with the NICU Interdisciplinary Team to create a child life program and innovative interventions in the NICU, including but not limited to: sibling support groups, caregiver groups and bereavement interventions. The CLS in the NICU will collaborate closely with the other Nemours CLS’s covering ICU’s to provide support and collaboration, with a goal of increasing the depth of resources that support bereavements. The CLS will be included in all department holiday and weekend on-call rotations. The schedule will include some routine weekly evening hours to assist in implementing sibling programming and attend to evening family support needs.
Direct Patient Care Responsibilities
Provides family/child education regarding diagnosis, treatment and the impact of hospitalization to increase understanding and minimize trauma and disruption in normal growth and development.
Utilizes stress reduction techniques to facilitate adaptive coping during procedures and throughout hospital experience.
Uses developmentally appropriate and medically accurate information to prepare children and families for diagnostic and treatment procedures, as defined in the Child Life preparation protocol. Psychological preparation will be provided in such a way that knowledge is increased and emotional needs are supported.
Provides medical play to allow children to explore, express, cope and gain a sense of mastery and control over their hospitalization and related fears, fantasies and concerns.
Assesses patients need for therapeutic, developmental and social/recreational play and provide as appropriate.

Works as a member of the healthcare team to address developmental, emotional, psychosocial and individual needs of patients to promote coping and adjustment to hospitalization.
Extends support to family members with respect to their needs, cultural values and beliefs.
Demonstrates proficiency in the care of pediatrics, adolescents and young adults.
Demonstrates proficiency in the care of neonates as required by assignment.
Provides information/effective treatment strategies and support to families while considering the lifelong implications for various diagnoses of patients seen within the department.
Completes timely documentation as required by Therapeutic Services department policy, JCAHO and CARF standards.
Attends meetings related to patient treatment and contributes to discussion as an interdisciplinary team member.
Attends inservices/continuing education; provides updates in the form of inservices to the department.
Participates in meeting goals of the department.
Indirect Patient Care Responsibilities
Staff Development: Assesses existing and develops new activities that promote general knowledge and professionalism within the department; participates in peer review process.
CQI: Participates in program, specialty and hospital CQI.
Assessment and Treatment: Contributes to discipline and program committees to enhance patient care; assists in assessing current procedures and assists in developing methods of improvement related to patient care.
Program Development: Participate in activities to increase program use, awareness and marketability. Attends monthly program meetings.
Clinical Education: Assists in mentoring Child life students, new Child life staff, support personnel, and volunteers. Adequately and appropriately provides Child Life Tech supervision. Assists with hospital-wide student teaching; participates in student and volunteer program organization.
Team Work: Participates in single discipline, multidisciplinary and specialty teams.
Professional Development: Developing ties with professional organizations. Provides educational inservices and experiences to the discipline/program and outside community.
Mandatory Inservice Training: Completes mandatory inservice training yearly which includes safety, infection control and corporate compliance training, CPR, and program specific respiratory training.
Professional/Child Life: Attends Child Life meetings as scheduled in hospital. May participate in promotional activities for Child Life (in hospital or community).
Education and Training

B.S. in Child Life, Child Development or related field

Has successfully demonstrated Clinical competency Guidelines as described by department
for this position description.
Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong teaching and interpersonal skills.
III. License, Registration, or Certification
Child Life Certification-or meets the requirements to take the Child Life certification exam.
CPR Certification (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) within 6 month of employment.
Member of professional specialty organizations (Child Life Council)
