RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
The Vice President, Inclusion and Engagement will be responsible for developing and executing / implementing the vision, direction and leadership for inclusion and engagement for Cavaliers Holdings, LLC, which includes the Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland Monsters, Canton Charge, Cleveland Gladiators and Quicken Loans Arena as determined with the collective work and input of senior leadership. Primarily, this position will provide leadership through research and best practices for organizational diversity, inclusion and engagement. In addition, one of the primary goals of the position will be to ensure diversity and inclusion of team members through programs. Develop initiatives at all levels and in all business areas of the company regarding age, race, color, gender, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, disability status, and veteran status. With the commitment to advance diversity and inclusion, this individual will establish best practices whereby diversity and inclusion will be defined within an organizational context and design a strategic, cross-team program that creates deeper cultural and ethnic awareness and sensitivity. Additionally, the position will provide guidance to the senior leadership team so that they can engender a diverse and inclusive workplace that provides opportunity for internal mobility for the benefit of team members and the organization. This position serves as an internal consultant to all senior leadership and their teams to ensure that diversity and inclusion is a part of the decision-making process throughout the company to help create a truly inclusive workplace and brand.
As a primary responsibility, the VP, Inclusion and Engagement will serve an outward facing role and act as a key representative and liaison in the community to raise awareness on our existing programs in the community and to partner with various organizations to ensure our engagement. The development and maintenance of new community partnerships that can leverage the organizational commitment to diversity and inclusion will be expected. He/she must liaise with external organizations and interest groups and represent the Cleveland Cavaliers and Quicken Loans organization at internal/external forums where the topic of diversity and inclusion can make an impact. He/she will work closely with the Senior VP of Communications to be a spokesperson for diversity and inclusion matters.
The position will be responsible for developing and leading the organization’s Diversity and Inclusion Council. The Diversity and Inclusion Council will serve as a foundational resource of support to the position as he/she carries out the responsibilities of the role.
With the Cavaliers already being one of the top teams in the NBA for diversity and inclusion, the position will partner with the VP, Human Resources to continue review and assessment of the on-going composition of the Cavaliers Holdings, LLC team member population and recommend processes and programs to ensure a continued inclusive workplace for existing team members and job candidates. This position will serve as a resource and expert to the Human Resources team in the advancement of diverse hiring, recruitment and the use of external recruitment resources. Additionally, this individual will work with the NBA HR and Diversity & Inclusion VPs as well as the HR team to develop and implement an array of diversity training and awareness programs within the organization to foster an inclusive workplace, which will include partnering with local and national resources to further the education, training and awareness of team members. In coordination with HR and Legal teams, the position will ensure that the Cleveland Cavaliers and Quicken Loans Arena use appropriate guidelines regarding equal opportunity, inclusion and non-discrimination. This will be aided and achieved through serving as a resource to internal search committees, the development of such things as employee resource groups (ERGs) and mentoring, conducting team member focus groups and the development of educational literature, guest speaker and cultural awareness programs.
The VP, Inclusion and Engagement will partner with the Director of Sourcing to review existing supplier diversity programs and consult on ways to expand these programs as well as help set benchmarks and goals in this area. He/she will also partner with Community Relations team to understand existing community programs and engagement and assist in educating the community on what we currently do as well as identify and expand on other appropriate and targeted community needs.
This leader will create a diversity report that will provide a comprehensive snapshot of all the Company’s diversity and inclusion efforts and programs across the organization allowing the Company to gain more clarity of effectiveness.
This position will report directly to the Executive Vice President, Chief Financial and Administrative Officer and work closely with the Chief Executive Officer.
SCOPE OF WORK:
Diversity and Inclusion Council:
Form the council which will be made up of Senior Leadership along with select other team members, develop agendas, meeting calendars and deliverables of the council.
Partner with our Chief Marketing Officer and other internal stakeholders to create programs that demonstrate the team’s commitment to creating an inclusive, respectful experience for fans inside and outside the arena. This will include print media and other outward facing materials. Will provide comment and direction to ensure the company brand reflects commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Develop a comprehensive diversity, inclusion and engagement strategy that is aligned with the Cavaliers’ and Quicken Loans business and community priorities.
Develop educational and training opportunities to raise awareness of differences with a focus on appropriate communication, sensitivity and using good judgment.
Partner with the Vice President, Human Resources to create a detailed plan to help the Cavaliers’ and Quicken Loans Arena continue to identify and recruit top talent with non-traditional backgrounds to drive innovation and leverage their unique assets to advance the objectives of the organization. Look for opportunities to connect and engage recently recruited and hired diverse team members within the community.
Retention and Development:
Develop a talent management and development framework for identifying and grooming high-potential, high-performing diverse team members that aligns with current practices for organizational retention and promotional practices. Work with the VP, Human Resources to document and communicate these practices.
Manage key non-political community relationships with an emphasis on partnering with other appropriate internal leaders and teams to advance the organization’s brand as it relates to social responsibility, targeted community sponsorship's and supplier diversity programs. Strategically engage community agencies and look for ways to partner with them that will allow for greater organizational impact and involvement.
- At least 10 years’ prior experience in business, management, communications, human resources, social sciences or other related fields.
- Prior experience in sports entertainment is preferred, but not a must.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management, Communications, Human Resources or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
- Ability to positively influence all areas and levels of the business and organization without direct reporting relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to design and articulate a strategic vision and proven experience with driving that vision throughout an organization.
- A recognized thought-leader on issues of diversity, inclusion and engagement.
- Strong business acumen.
- Established relationships with City of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County government and community leaders preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to present recommendations and proposals in a concise and understandable manner.
- Ability to work an extremely flexible schedule with long hours, as events are scheduled on weekends, holidays, evenings, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and manage multiple priorities using resolution / problem solving skills and a team focus.
- Ability to handle diverse responsibilities and can adapt to a variety of issues in a variety of settings.
